HOME STRETCH

Emporia State completes the regular season with three matches at home versus Fort Hays State, #13 Truman, and Lindenwood.

LAST TIME OUT 

Emporia State lost at Pittsburg State in four sets on Saturday. Katie Deutschmann came just shy of completing a triple double with eight kills, 18 assists, and 13 digs. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets in kills with nine while Raney Okeson added eight. Meg Schwartz had 20 digs. Vanderpool, Courtney Haring, and Carly Spicer shared the team lead with four total blocks.

LAST TIME VS. OPPONENTS 

Emporia State volleyball got 12 kills from Paige Vanderpool and 20 digs from Meg Schwartz as the Hornets fell 25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 25-20 loss at Fort Hays State on Sept. 29. Courtney Haring had seven total blocks. Brianna Kaiser had eight kills, 16 digs for the Hornets.

The Emporia State volleyball team needed extra points twice as they avenged an earlier loss to Truman with a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 26, 2011 at White Auditorium. The Hornets got 12 blocks and 64 digs to outpace the Bulldogs 26-24, 28-26 and 25-18. Kaiser finished with a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs.

SERIES RECORDS    

Emporia State leads Fort Hays State 48-26 all-time. Truman holds a 34-14 advantage all-time versus Emporia State. This is the first meeting between Emporia State and Lindenwood.

THE?COACHES

Bing Xu is 188-73 in his eighth year as head coach at Emporia State.  Xu has led the Hornets to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in five of the last seven seasons. In 2008 he led Emporia State to its first MIAA Championship. 

Kurt Kohler is in his fourth year with FHSU with an overall record of 54-79.

Ben Briney is in his fourth year with Truman with an overall record of 94-40.

Ron Young is in this 11th year with Lindenwood with an overall record of 326-128.


SCOUTING?THE OPPONENTS

Fort Hays State lost to #3 Washburn in four sets on the road. Madison Schwartz set a career-high with 21 kills, the first time any Tiger hitter has reached the 20 kill mark this season. Jenna Ulrich leads the Tigers averaging 2.74 kills per set and also averages a team-high 1.30 blocks per set. Kayla Zoglman runs the offense and is averaging 9.90 assists per set. 

Thirteenth-ranked Truman earned a split of its weekend matches at home, defeating Missouri Southern, but losing to #6 Central Missouri. The loss to UCM snapped a 16 match winning streak. Allie Brak is the Bulldogs’ leading hitter averaging 4.25 kills per set against MIAA opponents, and 3.82 overall.

Lindenwood lost its last match in three sets to Missouri Western on Nov. 3, its final home match of the season. Erin Anselman leads the Lady Lions averaging 2.54 kills per set, while Kelsey Kennedy and Kayla Guyot average 2.50 and 2.45, respectively.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Meg Schwartz is the Hornets all-time leader averaging 4.91 digs per set and fourth all-time in career digs with 1,709 having reached that milestone in the Hornets last match at Pittsburg State. Schwartz set a season-high with 33 digs vs. Upper Iowa on Sept. 8. Schwartz was a First Team All-MIAA performer last season. 

Kaitlin Stearns has played in 53 matches for the Hornets this season, primarily as a serve specialist. She set a season-with 12 digs vs. Upper Iowa on Sept. 8 and had four service aces vs. East Central on Oct. 5, a career-high. 

Caitlyn Murray set a season-high with nine kills in Emporia State’s win over Southern Nazarene on Oct. 6, and is averaging 1.23 kills per set for the Hornets this season. Last season, Murray recorded a career-high with 142 kills, averaging 1.72 per set. Her career-high in kills is 13, set at Northwest Missouri on Oct. 29, 2011. Murray also had 73 total blocks, second on the team.  

Raney Okeson is averaging 1.81 kills per set, totaling 65 for the season. She set a career-highs with 11 kills and five blocks in Emporia State’s win over Northwest Missouri on Oct. 20. 

UP NEXT

The top eight teams advance to the MIAA Tournament, which opens on Nov. 13.
