November 16, 2012 – The Emporia State volleyball team was defeated in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament by top seed and second-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 at the Health and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.
 
Meg Schwartz recorded 13 digs on the night to lead the Hornets. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets with eight kills, followed by Brianna Kaiser with five. Carly Spicer hit .667 with four kills from six attempts. Spicer shared the lead in blocks with Katie Deutschmann, who added 10 assists and three kills. Kaitlin Stearns came on to serve the Hornets only ace on the night.
 
In set one, the Lopers earned the first three points, but the Hornets gained a 5-4 lead through three successive kills from Vanderpool. With the scores tied at 6-6, the Lopers went on a 6-0 run to make the score 12-6. Emporia State answered with a 4-0 run, to close within two and force Nebraska-Kearney into a timeout. With the Hornets trailing 15-14, the Lopers scored nine straight points to take control and win the first set 25-15.
 
Nebraska-Kearney never trailed again in the match and opened set two on a 13-3 run. Emporia State had 10 hitting errors in the set and hit -.075.
 
In set three, Nebraska-Kearney opened with the first nine points, which proved insurmountable. The Hornets found themselves down 22-8 but rallied for six straight points, which included kills by Raney Okeson, Deutschmann, and Spicer. Deutschmann and Spicer also combined for a block.
 
The Lopers hit .319 on the night, while holding Emporia State to a .074 hitting percentage, with a 71-51 advantage in digs. Ariel Krolikowski led Nebraska-Kearney with 13 kills.
 
Emporia State finishes 2012 with a 20-12 record. Nebraska-Kearney improves to 32-2 and will play in the MIAA Championship match versus Central Missouri tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
 
Notes:
-Meg Schwartz finishes her career averaging 4.98 digs per set, best in program history. She also finished with 1,829 digs, third on the all-time list.
-Head coach Bing Xu has recorded 20 or more wins the past six seasons.
