THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD
Emporia State embarks on its last road trip of the season as it travels to Springfield, Mo. for a midweek game with Drury before heading to Missouri Southern this weekend.
 
LAST TIME OUT 
The Emporia State soccer team held Truman to four shots on goal, but were defeated 1-0 on a 64th minute goal by Kelsey Twellman at ESU Pitch in Emporia, Kan. on October 14. The game was largely defensive, as the two teams battled for control of the midfield and battled windy conditions. The first half ended with both teams recording four shots. Tommi Bouknight and Mallory Walden tied for the team lead with two shots.
Emporia State’s game with Lindenwood was cancelled due to lightning and rain and will be made up at a later date.
 
THE COACHES?
Bryan Sailer is 6-19-6 in his second season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record.
Alf Bilbao is in his seventh season as head coach of Drury with an overall record of 72-47-14.
Alese Woolard is in her third season as head coach of Missouri Southern with a career record of 17-26-8.
 
SERIES HISTORY
This is the second meeting between Drury and Emporia State, Drury won the only other meeting.
Missouri Southern leads the all-time series with Emporia State 15-3-4.
 
LAST TIME VS. OPPONENTS
Emporia State last played Drury on Oct. 6, 2007 in Springfield, which the Panthers won 3-0 after scoring three second half goals. ESU and MSSU last met in Emporia on Oct. 2, 2011. The Hornets took the lead through a Catie Hyde goal in the 11th minute, but two late second half goals gave Missouri Southern a 2-1 win.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Drury defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 1-0 at courtesy of a Kelly Gallagher penalty kick in double overtime on Oct. 14. Forward Shelby Hatz has scored 10 goals in 14 games for the Panthers, including three game winners. Goalkeeper Kelsey Vaught has recorded a 1.16 goals against average in 13 starts. Drury has posted a 6-1-1 at home.
Missouri Southern lost at #9 Southwestern Oklahoma 3-0 on Oct. 14. The Lions are led offensively by Megan Stueve with nine goals, tied for the conference lead entering this week. The Lions use two goalies in Beth Hammons and Abby Risner, who have combined for a 2.08 goals against average this season.
 
FINDING THE TARGET
Nearly half of Emporia State’s shots this season have been on goal. The Hornets have attempted 144 shots with 71 on goal, resulting in a .493 shot on goal percentage. The Hornets have held opponents to a .425 shot on goal percentage while attempting 160 shots.
 
SOMETHING’s GOT TO GIVE
Emporia State’s offense will face the MIAA’s lowest ranked defensive team in Missouri Southern. The Lions have allowed a league high 28 goals this season, with opponents scoring 2.25 goals per game.
