October 14, 2012 - The Emporia State soccer team held Truman to four shots on goal, but were defeated 1-0 on a 64th minute goal by Kelsey Twellman at ESU Pitch in Emporia, Kan.
The game was largely defensive, as the two teams battled for control of the midfield and battled windy conditions. The first half ended with both teams recording four shots. Tommi Bouknight's effort from the edge of the penalty box in the ninth minute sailed high, past the outstretched hands of Truman goalkeeper Emily Bozdeck. Bouknight and Mallory Walden tied for the team lead with two shots.
The second half started much like the first, with both teams having an equal share of the ball. Truman broke through after a long ball fell in the Emporia State half, resulting in a foot race between Twellman and the Emporia State defense. Twellman's shot from the edge of the penalty box beat Hornets' goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz for the game's only goal.
Emporia State soccer is in action on Wednesday at Drury. Kickoff from Springfield, Mo. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
