Avenge earlier road loss to Bulldogs

October 25, 2011 -- The Emporia State Volleyball team needed extra points twice as they avenged an earlier loss to Truman with a 3-0 sweep. The Hornets got 12 blocks and 64 digs to outpace the Bulldogs 26-24, 28-26 and 25-18.

In the first set, ESU jumped out to a 4-2 advantage, but TSU answered to take a 10-8 lead. The two teams would never be further than one point apart until ESU took a 20-18 lead. TSU would break two ESU set points at 24-22 to knot the match up at 24 points. ESU would then put the final two points on the board to earn the 26-24 victory.

In the second set Truman jumped out to a 4-0 lead before ESU rallied back to tie the match at six apiece. TSU would push their lead back out to four points as they took a 14-10 lead. ESU would rally again and tie the match up at 16-16 with three straight points. This time around it would be the Hornets breaking two TSU set points and tieing the match up at 24-24. Truman would fight off one set point of their own before ESU took the match 28-26.

In the third set ESU ran out to a 7-3 advantage before Truman answered the bell and tied things up at 13 apiece. ESU would score eight of the next ten points and close out the match with a 25-18 victory. The match saw 30 ties and 10 lead changes.

For the Hornets Paige Vanderpool hit .357 and had a match high 13 kills. Brianna Kaiser finished with a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Courtney Haring had a match high eight blocks to go along with seven kills while hitting .333 on the night.

Amanda Gerety had a double-double for ESU with 21 assists and 15 digs. Meg Schwartz averaged 8.0 digs per set and she finished with the night with a match high 24 digs. Katie Deutschmann had seven kills, 19 assists, seven digs and three blocks.

ESU will travel to Missouri Western on Oct. 28 for a 7 p.m. first serve from St. Joseph, Mo.
