May 28, 2021-A total of 33 teams took part in the Emporia State Athletics Summer Classic Golf Tournament on Friday at the Emporia Golf Course.
 
The foursome of Braxton Marstall, Landon Nault, Seth Surface and Travis Surface won the championship flight with a 55 (-16) in the four person scramble.  They finished one stroke in front of Barry Broxterman, Brian Dewitt, Derrek Harter and Jamie Sauder.
 
Marty Lippert, Kevin Nelson, Nick Nelson and Hugh O'Reilly shot 64 (-7) and won in a scorecard playoff with six other teams to win the A flight. They had to go to the third tiebreaker before determining a winner.
 
The quartet of Jeff Brown, Todd Hyatt, Dave Meats, and Tim Vietti won the B Flight shooting 66 (-5) to edge out Scott Booth, Bob Gould, Eddie Linhart and Jane Linhart.
 
Over $20,000 was raised on the golf tournament to help the 15 intercollegiate athletics programs at Emporia State. This was the 37^th straight year Emporia State Athletics has hosted a fundraising golf tournament and the second straight time they have done it as a stand-alone event. 
 
"It's always fun to be able to be on the golf course to cap off another great athletic season," said Emporia State Assistant Athletic Director/External Brett McLaughlin. "We are excited to be back out here in August to kick off the new season with the Auction and Golf Tournament as we celebrate all that is Hornet Athletics." 
 
While the Summer Classic gave Emporia State a chance to wrap up and celebrate the 2020-21 seasons, the ESU Athletics Auction and Golf Tournament has been moved to August and will let Hornet Nation kick-off a new year of action as we continue to return to normal. The Auction is scheduled to be held in White Auditorium on Thursday, August 19 starting with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. while the Kick-off Golf Tournament is set for a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, August 20.
