Giovanna Ferreira and
Carla Paul Piquer picked up a win over a nationally ranked team in doubles but it was not enough as the Hornets fell 6-1 to #40 Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon at the Kossover Family Tennis Center.
DOUBLES
Ferreira and Paul Piquer got the Hornets started well with a 6-3 win over #48 Jevrosima Mitic and Alejandra Ramirez at #1 doubles. But the Griffons came back with 6-4 wins at #2 and #3 doubles to take the early 1-0 lead.
SINGLES
Three of the singles matches went to third set and the other three only had one set decided by more than two games. Mitic defeated Paul Piquer 7-5, 6-2 at #2 and Cristina Granero Boj won 6-4, 6-4 over Yulima Klimova at #3 to give Western a 3-0 lead.
Sheriden Wichman won the first set 6-1 over Ramirez before falling 6-2, 6-2 at #4 for the Griffon clinch. Ferreira fell 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) at #1 singles before
Erin Cahill delivered the Hornets lone win with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win at #5 singles.
Giulia Russu lost the first set in a tie breaker at #6, falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 for the final score.
UP NEXT
The Hornets are back in action on Sunday when they take on #42 Northwest Missouri at the Kossover Family Tennis Center. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. with the Hornet men taking on the #50 men one hour after the completion of the women's dual.
