Saturday Sweep for Hornet Baseball Over New Mexico Highlands

Emporia State wins game one 13-0; adds another 13 runs for 13-1 game two win

March 21, 2026 – Emporia State baseball picked up a Saturday sweep over New Mexico Highlands, winning game one 13-0 and adding a 13-1 win in game two.
 
Game 1 (ESU 13, NMHU 0)
Colby Deaver got the game one start and used nine pitches to retire the Cowboys in order in the first. Emporia State picked up a pair of walks from Logan Myers and Evan Abbott to start the bottom half before both scored on Frankie Santiago's 11th home run of the season to make the score 3-0.
 
The score settled at 3-0 through three innings, with Deaver keeping the opponents out of the hit column, until the Hornets added four more runs in the fourth frame. RBI singles from Tyler Coffin and Frankie Santiago, and an RBI double by Logan Myers extended the advantage to 7-0.
 
Emporia State added another big inning in the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits, with Myers adding two more RBI while Gus Keller, Noah Steele and Brady Unrein all picked up an RBI of their own.
 
Deaver capped his outing with a scoreless sixth and the final run for the Hornets came in the bottom of the sixth off the bat of Aaron Gallimore. Gallimore pinch-hit to lead off the inning and in his first career plate appearance, smashed a home run over the centerfield wall to cap the scoring at 13.
 
 
Matthew Postier pitched a scoreless seventh to seal the 13-0 win in seven innings for the Hornets.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Ten Hornets picked up a hit, with Logan Myers, Frankie Santiago, Noah Steele, and Tyler Coffin all picking up multi-hit games.
 
Colby Deaver pitched six shutout innings and struck out five, marking his six outing with no earned runs allowed in the game. Deaver is now 7-1 on the season.
 
Game 2 (ESU 13, NMHU 1)
The second game of the afternoon featured constant scoring by Emporia State, as the Hornets scored in all six innings at the plate. Evan Abbott followed a leadoff double by Logan Myers with an RBI single, and later scored on a solo homer by Cooper Schwindt to build another 3-0 first-inning lead.
 
In the second, Noah Steele drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Austin Lynn picked up his first RBI of the season on a sac fly in the third to build a 6-0 advantage.
 
Schwindt and Dominic Felix both picked up RBI hits in the fourth to extend the lead to 8-0, and Emporia State added four more in the fifth on a solo home run by Austin Lynn, the first of his career, and a three-run homer by Evan Abbott as the lead swelled to 12-0.
 
 
The Cowboys got on the board in the sixth, but the run was answered with an RBI from Gus Keller to cap the scoring on the day with the Hornets taking game two 13-1.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Noah Steele and Cooper Schwindt both tallied three-hit games, while Logan Myers, Evan Abbott and Sammy Padilla all had two hits of their own.
 
The Hornet bullpen combined to allow one run in 7.0 innings, as Emporia State used six pitchers in the game. Grayson Barnes earned the win behind a shutout fifth frame where he struck out the side.
 
UP NEXT
The final game of the series is set for 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 22 from Turnbull Field.
 
NOTES
Logan Myers picked up three doubles in the doubleheader and now has 37 in his career, which ties Tod Schultz for ninth in program history.
 
Myers also was walked twice on the day and moved past Rick Elliot for ninth in program history with 87 career walks.
