Double Header Sweep for Emporia State Softball at Newman

Hornets win 7-1, 14-1 over Jets

March 21, 2026-Emporia State scored 21 runs on 25 hits in a double header sweep of Newman on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kan.
 
GAME 1 Emporia State 7, Newman 1
The Hornets gave up a run in the first but scored the next seven in a 7-1 win in the opener.
An RBI double by AJ Borja gave the Jets the lead in the first but the Hornets responded with a Kinsey Perine single that scored Ally Miller to tie the game at 1-1 after one. Addison Callaway gave Emporia State a 2-1 lead with an RBI ground out that plated Taryn Burkhardt in the third inning.
Brooke Flewelling delivered her MIAA leading 11th home run of the season with two outs in the fifth to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead. Emporia State scored four runs on three hits and an error in the top of the sixth to blow the game open.  Miller started the scoring with an RBI single to score Callaway and Elina Bartlett followed with a sac fly that plated pinch runner Sophie Herman.  Perin then delivered an RBI triple to give Emporia State a 6-1 lead. With two outs Burkhardt reached on an error that allowed Perine to score the final run for the Hornets.
Hannah Butterbaugh went the distance in the circle for Emporia State allowing one run on six hits.  She only gave up three hits and no runs over the last 6.2 innings to pick up her ninth win of the season. Perine was two for three with a triple, two RBI and a run scored while Miller went two for three with a run scored and an RBI.  Every starter for the Hornets had at least one hit.

GAME 2 Emporia State 14, Newman 1 (5 innings)
The first six batters reached base and scored on the way to a 14-1 run rule win in the night cap.
Sydney Wagner reached on an error to lead off the game. Infield singles by Taryn Burkhardt and Brooke Flewelling laded the bases and Brynley followed with an RBI single to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Addison Callaway then doubled in two runs before Avery Brewer delivered a three-run homer to center field for a 6-0 lead.
Emporia State added six more runs in the top of the third.  Elina Bartlett led off with a double and a walk by Kinsey Perine and infield single by Burkhardt loaded the bases.  Flewelling singled in Bartlett to make it 7-0 before Brynley Smith worked a walk to make it 8-0.  Callaway followed with a two run single that put the Hornets up 10-0.  A walk to Brewer reloaded the bases. With two outs Bartlett came to the plate for the second time in the inning and hit her second double of the frame, driving in two runs and giving the Hornets a 12-0 lead.
The Jets go on the board in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Hannah Nordby.
The Hornets scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth.  Karli Wehunt led off reaching on an error and with two outs Leslie Ramos doubled her in.  Juliana De Luna followed with a double of her own to plate Ramos and give ESU a 14-1 lead.
Newman loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the fifth but Chloe Wilson got a strike out and the Hornets got an 8-5 double play to end the game.
Every starter had a hit for the Hornets in the nightcap highlighted by Addison Callaway going two for three with a double, four RBI and two runs scored. Elina Bartlett went three for three with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored while Avery Brewer had a three run homer.
Morgan Tomlinson picked up the win allowing just one run on four hits in 3.0 innings of the run rule shortened 5.0 inning game.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets, now 19-8 and 5-1 in the MIAA, return to the Trusler Sports Complex on Friday, March 27 for a doubleheader against #11 Pittsburg State.  First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
