Hornet Softball Drops Doubleheader Against #7 Gorillas

Emporia State falls 5-3 in game one; 9-2 in game two against Pittsburg State

March 27, 2026 – Emporia State softball fell in both games of their doubleheader against #7 Pittsburg State on Friday afternoon, as the Gorillas took game one 5-3 and game two 9-2.
 
Game 1 (#7 PSU 5, ESU 3)
The seventh-ranked Gorillas jumped in front of the Hornets in their first at-bat of the day, scoring two runs on four hits to take a 2-0 lead. Taryn Burkhardt was the first Hornet hitter to reach, drawing a one-out walk in the first before recording her 23rd steal of the season. Emporia State was unable to convert, leaving Burkhardt on second.
 
After Pittsburg State scored in the third, Emporia State got on the board in the fourth, as Ally Miller hit her first home run of the season to trim the Pittsburg State lead to 3-2.
 
Following a scoreless fifth, both teams picked up a run in the sixth. Emporia State's run came courtesy of an RBI single by Addison Callaway as Pittsburg State held a narrow 4-3 lead heading to the final frame.
 
The Gorillas picked up an insurance run in their final at-bat on a solo home run and despite Emporia State picking up a pair of hits in the bottom half, the Hornets fell 5-3 in game one of the doubleheader.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
The Hornets tallied six hits, with two RBI from Ally Miller on her fourth-inning home run, and another from Addison Callaway. Sydney Wagner tallied two hits, her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
 
Game 2 (#7 PSU 9, ESU 2)
Morgan Tomlinson got the start in the second game of the afternoon and worked a pair of shutout innings as the score remained tied at 0-0 heading to the third.
 
Pittsburg State scored single runs in the third and fourth frames to take a 2-0 lead, before their first big inning came in the fifth, as the visitors scored three runs on two hits and a pair of Hornet errors to expand their lead to 5-0.
 
Emporia State was able to respond in the bottom half with two of their own, which came on a two-run triple by Brooke Flewelling to make the score 5-2.
 
The Hornets nearly held the Gorillas scoreless in the sixth, before a pair of two-out hits resulted in four runs as the lead swelled to 9-2 over Emporia State.
 
Emporia State went without a hit in their final two times at the plate, as they fell 9-2 in game two of the doubleheader.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
The Hornets tallied just five hits, with Taryn Burkhardt picking up two for her tenth multi-hit game of the season. Brooke Flewelling drove in both runs and is up to 30 RBI on the season.

UP NEXT
Emporia State will remain at Trusler on Saturday, March 28 as they host #11 Missouri Southern. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
