Emporia State Tennis Splits Duals in Orlando

Hornet men sweep Vassar; ESU women fall to #44 Angelo State

March 17, 2026-The Emporia State tennis teams began their Spring Break trip to Florida with a split as the men defeated Vassar 7-0 and the women fell 7-0 to #44 Angelo State.

The Hornet men did not drop a set in the 7-0 win over Division III Vassar College.
DOUBLES
Roko Kacer and Gwendal Mazuay won 6-2 at #2 while Luke West and Anton Sarunic  won 6-1 at #1 doubles to give Emporia State the first point.  Diego Calvo and Duvan Santiago Torres completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win at the #3 spot.
SINGLES
The Hornets got off to a quick start in singles with Mostafa Elbasnaly winning 6-0, 6-1 at #1, Calvo picking up a 6-0, 6-2 win at #2 and Luke West prevailing 6-0, 6-3 at #3 to clinch the win for the Hornets.  Kacer picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at #6 and Alexis Mattenberger won 6-2, 6-3 at #5 before Torres completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at #4 singles.
 
#44 Angelo State Women 7, Emporia State 0
Emporia State fell to #44 Angelo State 7-0 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. on Tuesday afternoon.
DOUBLES
The Hornets Carla Paul Piquer and Yuliya Klimova fell 6-2 at #1 to the 35th ranked Rambelle duo of Margaux Rene and Benedetta Raggiotti while Sheriden Wichman and Giovanna Ferreira dropped a 6-2 decision at #2 to Danaiy Amangazhiyeva and Vasilissa Kupriyanova to give Angelo State a 1-0 lead.  Ana Fatjo Coll and Giulia Russu were leading at #3 when there match was abandoned.
SINGLES
The Rambelles took straight set wins at #5, #6 and #3 singles to clinch the dual win.  Ferreira took #12 Rene to a tiebreaker in the first set before falling 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 at #1 singles. Wichman went to three sets at #4 before falling 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-3) to Raggiotti. In the final match of the afternoon Klimova fell 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 to 26th ranked Kupriyanova.
 
UP NEXT
The Emporia State women will take on Tampa on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Orlando while the men will next take the courts on Thursday at Rollins in Winter Park, Fla.
