Emporia State is 7-7 on the season, 1-4 in the MIAA.
Kaitlyn Sanders is the third leading scorer in the MIAA at 16.6 points per game. She is joined in double figures by
Gracie Gilpin at 13.0 points.
ABOUT THE LOPERS
Neb.-Kearney is 9-7, 2-3 in the MIAA. The Lopers lead the MIAA in steals and turnovers forced. Myleigh Weers is their leading scorer at 15.8 points per game.
ABOUT THE COACHES
MJ Baker is 7-7 in her first season with the Lady Hornets and is 58-53 in her fourth year as a head coach at a four year institution. She has won 341 games as a collegiate coach and comes to Emporia State after an eight year run at Eastern Florida State College. She went 183-58 with three conference championships and three trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament during her time. This is her first meeting with Neb.-Kearney.
Drew Johnson is 48-27 in his third year at UNK and 125-123 overall in his ninth year as a head coach. He is 3-0 against ESU as the Lopers head coach, 4-4 all-time after going 1-3 with Newman.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lady Hornets lead the overall series 35-19 but the Lopers have won the last six contests.
LAST TIME VS NEB.-KEARNEY
The Lady Hornets had a chance at a game winning shot in the final seconds but fell 73-71 at Neb.-Kearney. The Lopers led 36-35 at the break and took their biggest lead at 48-37 with 5:54 left in the third quarter. ESU used an 11-2 run to pull within 50-48 with 2:51 left in the period. The Lopers hit a 35 footer at the buzzer to take a 59-54 lead into the fourth.
Gracie Gilpin hit a three-pointer with 3:28 left to give the Lady Hornets a 71-69 lead. UNK scored with 2:44 left to tie the game at 71. It would be the last basket for either team until Samantha Moore scored with 17.7 seconds left to put UNK up 73-71.
Katie Horyna got a clean look at a three-pointer with five seconds left but bounced off the rim twice. Gilpin led all scorers with 23 points, going six of nine from the three-point arc.
Jayla Cornelius scored 12 while
Makenzie McDaniel and
Macey Gandee each had ten points.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Hornets were with two points with nine minutes left before #6 Fort Hays State pulled away for an 82-64 win on Thursday. Emporia State led 14-10 after the first quarter. The Tigers used a 10-0 run to go up 28-21 with 6:07 left in the half and took a 35-28 lead into the break.
Gracie Gilpin hit a three to cap a 9-2 run and pull ESU within 50-49 with 28 seconds left in the third.
Elizabeth Tjaden hit a three with 9:12 left to get the Lady Hornets within 54-52 but the Tigers scored the next eight points to take a 62-52 lead and steadily pulled away. Gilpin had 18 points while
Micah Hannah grabbed six rebounds for Emporia State.
