Emporia State Volleyball Falls Against #16 Point Loma in Season Opener

Hornets fall in three sets to Sea Lions; hit .368 in the final two sets

September 4, 2025 - Emporia State volleyball fell in three sets against #16 Point Loma on Thursday night despite the Hornets hitting over .300 in each of the last two sets.
 
SET ONE
The Hornets and Sea Lions traded points early to begin the match, with the first set tied 6-6 early on. Point Loma proceeded to score ten of the next 13 points, forcing Emporia State to use both timeouts during the scoring run. The Sea Lions controlled the remainder of the set taking a 1-0 lead in the match behind a 25-17 set one win.
 
SET TWO
Emporia State responded well to begin the second, jumping out to a 10-5 lead, which forced the hosts to call a timeout. Nyia Anderson tallied three kills in the prior to the timeout. Point Loma responded with a scoring run of their own, rallying to take a 16-13 advantage. The Hornets responded with four straight points, with three kills coming from freshman Emma Klett. Down the stretch, the Hornets and Sea Lions traded points, and after the set was tied 22-22, Point Loma rallied to score three of the final four to take the second set 25-23.
 
SET THREE
In the third frame, the two teams traded points throughout the set, with Point Loma eventually forcing an Emporia State timeout with the Hornets trailing 19-15. Following the timeout, the Hornets fought back, eventually pulling level at 23-23 before a Nyia Anderson kill put Emporia State in front 24-23. After a timeout from the Sea Lions, the hosts scored three straight to take set three and the match in straight sets.
 
A LOOK AT THE STATS
Nyia Anderson led the Hornets with 11 kills, hitting .308 in the match. Off the bench, Emma Klett hit .455 with six kills. Lavra Krizanic and Camilla Ossola each recorded five kills of their own. Delainee Dexter and Brailee Bogle combined for 26 assists in the match. On defense, Brooklyn Weaver had two solo blocks and four block assists while Camilla Ossola had five block assists.
 
UP NEXT
The Hornets will continue the San Diego Invite on Friday, September 5 against (RV) Cal State-San Bernardino. First serve against the Coyotes is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. (PT).
