HOME SWEET HOME
Emporia State will host their first two of eight home matches this season as UMary and Northern State take on the Hornets from the ESU Pitch. The fixtures are return matches from the Hornets' first two matches of the 2024 season where the Hornets beat the Wolves before falling to the Marauders.

LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets travel to the Show Me State to begin year two under head coach Jane Grimley-Gunn as Emporia State took on a pair of ranked foes in Drury and Maryville. Emporia State fell by one goal in both matches, 1-0 against the 14th-ranked Panthers and 2-1 against the 25th-ranked Saints. Megyn Mahloch scored the goal for the Hornets last Sunday on an assist from Aubrey Seltman.

TOP GUNN
Jane Grimley-Gunn is in year two at the helm of Hornet Soccer and is 6-10-3. Grimley-Gunn spent the previous two seasons as the head coach for Missouri S&T's women's program. In 2023, the Miners had their longest unbeaten streak to start a season since 1997 and made a trip to the GLVC Tournament for the fourth time in school history. She was 1-0-1 against the MIAA in her two years, defeating Missouri Southern and playing to a 0-0 tie against Washburn. Prior to her time in Rolla, Grimley-Gunn was the associate head coach at her alma mater Goldey-Beacom College for four years. In those four seasons, the Lightning went 48-24-4. She was also named a recipient of the "30 under 30" award by the United Soccer Coaches in 2019.

A LOOK AT THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 0-2 on the season, with the Hornets narrowly falling by one goal against two ranked opponents last week. The Hornets fell 1-0 against #14 Drury and 2-1 against #25 Maryville. In the match against the Saints, Megyn Mahloch scored the goal for the Hornets, which came on an assist from Aubrey Seltman. Staples of the starting lineup include seniors Abby Bachman and Mackenzi Goen, who have 66 and 55 matches played in their Hornet careers, with both starting the first two matches this season. Multiple newcomers have made an early impact in minutes played this season, including Peyton Pipes, Kylie Richardson, Ella Favot and Morgan Davis.

ABOUT THE MARAUDERS
UMary 1-0 this season and are coming off their third consecutive season with 10 or more wins as head coach Sarah Cook begins year 14 with the Marauders. The season opened with a 2-0 win over MSU-Billings last week. UMary was picked to finish sixth in the NSIC this season, after the 2024 season was ended by eventual Central Region champ and national runner-up Minnesota State in the semis of the NSIC Tournament. Rachel Gensch and Dina Polanco were the goalscorers in the season opener, with Polanco tallying three shots in the win. Sophomore Kadyn Dilger started between the posts in match one, and posted a shutout behind a pair of saves in the match. Other notable players for the Marauders include Tara Young, Allison Lepp, Chloe Brand and Rio Spruenken who all played over 70 minutes in the opener.

ABOUT THE WOLVES
Northern State is 0-2 through the first week of the season, with both losses coming at the hands of MIAA opponents Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western. The Wolves were picked just behind UMary in the NSIC Preseason Poll, as the coaches slotted NSU into the seven spot. Northern State is still searching for their first goal of the season, and eight different players have tallied a shot through the first two matches. Taylor Dudzinski has been most threatening on goal so far, with both of her shot attempts forcing saves from the opposing goalkeeper. MacKenzie Turner has started both matches in goal, and has ten saves to her name.
