February 1, 2025-Emporia State came away with four more provisional qualifying marks and an event championship on Saturday at the WU Open in Topeka, Kan.
Â
Connor Deters highlighted the day for Emporia State as he won the men's shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 16.92m (55-6.25) that ranks in the top five all-time for the Hornets. He unleashed the personal best on his first throw of the competition while five of his six attempts passed the provisional mark. He moved past Jim Riedesel into fifth in Emporia State history in the event. Riedesel had thrown 55-0.75 at the 1999 MIAA Championships. Deters is ranked 18th in the nation as of Saturday night.
Â
The day started off with provisional qualifiers in both multi-events.Â
Luke Grace finished third in the men's heptathlon with 4,979 points while
Isabella Davie place third in the women's pentathlon with 3,330 points. Davie was able to move up ten spots over the last two events, thanks in part to a pentathlon meet record of 2:20.46 in the 800m.  Grace is ranked 20th nationally as of Saturday night while Davie is now ranked 24th in the nation.
Â
Max Neeley cleared the highest bar in the men's invitational pole vault but placed second due to misses. His provisional qualifier of 4.87m (15-11.75) is just one centimeter from his career best that ranks fourth all-time at Emporia State and is currently 23rd in Division II.
Â
Ty Anderson hit the provisional mark in both the semifinals and finals of the men's 60m. He was clocked in 6.81 in the semifinals and came back with a 6.77 to place sixth.  Anderson's best time this year is 6.73 and ranks 14th in the nation.
Â
Emporia State will be back in action next weekend at the Bearcat Invite in Maryville, Mo. Events will begin at 12 noon on Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Hughes Fieldhouse on the campus of Northwest Missouri.
