ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State is 4-3 on the season, 0-1 in the MIAA.
Kaitlyn Sanders is the leading scorer for the Lady Hornets at 18.7 points per game while
Gracie Gilpin is averaging 11.9 points per game.
Macey Gandee is averaging 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds over the last five games.
ABOUT THE GRIFFONS
Missouri Western is 2-6, 0-1 in the MIAA but have played the toughest schedule in the country to date. Ana Oliveira Dias averages 12.7 points per game to lead three Griffons in double figures while Nakiya Harris averages 9.9 points and 7.3 boards per game.
ABOUT THE COACHES
MJ Baker is 4-3 in her first season with the Lady Hornets and is 55-49 in her fourth year as a head coach at a four year institution. She has won 336 games as a collegiate coach and comes to Emporia State after an eight year run at Eastern Florida State College. She went 183-58 with three conference championships and three trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament during her time. This is her first meeting with Missouri Western.
Luke Scheidecker is 2-6 in his first year at MWSU. This is his first game with Emporia State.
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE GRIFFONS
Emporia State holds a 60-42 overall advantage however Missouri Western has won eight of the last nine meetings.
LAST TIME AGAINST MISSOURI WESTERN
In a game that saw ten ties and 17 lead changes Missouri Western came away with a 69-67 victory over Emporia State in White Auditorium.
Missouri Western led 20-19 after one quarter and the teams continued slugging it out over the first seven and a half minutes of the second period and were tied at 34-34 with 2:22 left in the half.
Jayla Cornelius scored to start a 5-0 mini run for Emporia State and a
Macy Smith free throw gave the Lady Hornets a 39-34 lead with 1:14 remaining in the half. Western got a pair of buckets around a
Macy Smith three-pointer for Emporia State as the Lady Hornets took a 42-40 lead into the half. Cornelius hit one of two free throws with 8:09 left in the third to give Emporia State a 46-42 lead. It would be the last time the Lady Hornets scored until Gilpin hit a three with 1:47 left in the period, however the Emporia State defense was able to limit the Griffons to just nine points in that span.
Katie Horyna drove inside for a layup with 19 seconds left to send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 51. Cornelius scored on a layup with 4:12 remaining to make it 66-57 but it would be the last field goal for Emporia State. An 8-0 run got Western within 66-65 with 2:32 left. Cornelius hit one of two free throws with 1:21 remaining to put the Lady Hornets up by two. Caron then hit a three-pointer with 1:10 left to give the Griffons a 68-67 lead. After a timeout the Lady Hornets had the ball in the front court but had trouble getting control of the ball and Cornelius was forced to take a deep three pointer that bounced off the rim as time expired.
Katie Horyna led Emporia State with 22 points and four assists. She was joined in double figures by
Jayla Cornelius with 19 points while
Gracie Gilpin added 13 points.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Hornets put together a second half surge to erase a 19 point deficit and force overtime, before falling 77-69 at Northwest Missouri on Thursday night.
The Lady Hornets trailed 19-16 after one period. The second quarter was a struggle offensively for both teams as they combined to shoot just 4-24 from the floor, with Emporia State tallying just one field goal. Entering the halftime break, the Lady Hornet trailed 26-20.
Northwest Missouri opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run and outscored the Lady Hornets 17-8 over the first five minutes of the second half. The lead grew to as much as 47-28 before Emporia State found their rhythm. The Lady Hornets outscored the Bearcats 14-5, including the final eight of the third to make the score 52-42 heading to the fourth. Emporia State scored 12 of the first 16 points in the fourth, trimming the Bearcat lead to 56-54. Following consecutive baskets by the Bearcats, Emporia State scored eight of the final ten points, capped by Katiyah Casey layup with 7.7 seconds remaining to tie the game 62-62 and force overtime.
In the extra period, a layup from
Kaitlyn Sanders at the 4:05 mark put the Lady Hornets ahead for the first time since the first quarter. However the Bearcats outscored the Lady Hornets 15-5, going ten of 14 from teh free throw line the rest of the way.
Kaitlyn Sanders led all scorers with 26 points.
Macey Gandee and
Gracie Gilpin joined Sanders in double figures with 14 and 11 points each. Northwest Missouri held a 50-33 rebounding advantage, including a 24-5 edge in second chance points.
