ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State has won three straight to imrove to 3-2 on the season playing the 18th toughest schedule in the nation. MIAA Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Sanders is the leading scorer for the Lady Hornets at 19.8 points per game while
Gracie Gilpin is 11.6 points per game.
ABOUT THE SPIRES
Saint Mary is 5-3 on the year with a 2-1 mark in KCAC play. Addison Tower is the leading scorer for the Spires at 16.1 points per game and is joined in dobule figures by Keely Barnard at 11.1 and Aby Wendte at 10.5 points per game.
ABOUT THE COACHES
MJ Baker is 3-2 in her first season with the Lady Hornets and is 54-48 in her fourth year as a head coach at a four year institution. She has won 335 games as a collegiate coach and comes to Emporia State after an eight year run at Eastern Florida State College. She went 183-58 with three conference championships and three trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament during her time. This is her first meeting with Saint Mary.
Andy Kelley is 74-56 in his fifth year at Saint Mary. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE SPIRES
The Lady Hornets have won the previous two meetings between the two by an average score of 99-27, b ut the two have not met since November 18, 2000. The won that game 95-20 after taking a 103-33 win on November 23, 1999.
LAST TIME AGAINST SAINT MARY
The Lady Hornets opened the 2000-01 season with a 95-20 win over Saint Mary in White Auditorium. Ricka McKee and Emily Bloss each scored 22 points for Emporia State while Myshka Wilkerson pulled down 19 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Hornets used a 32 point third quarter to take control in a 75-62 win over Quincy on Tuesday night in White Auditorium.
After giving up a three-pointer to start the game Emporia State used a 7-0 run for a 7-3 with 7:37 left in the opening quarter. The would go up 20-12 on a pair of free throws from
Kaitlyn Sanders with seven seconds left in the period. The Hawks shot nine of 14 from the field in the second quarter as they took a 35-28 lead into the half. With the score tied at 25 following an
Allison Reese put back, Quincy went on a 9-0 run to take a 34-25 lead with 2:29 left in the half. The Lady Hornets allowed just one free throw the rest of the period as Quincy led 35-28 at the break.
Kaylin Noonan scored on a put back with 7:33 left to get Emporia State within four at 39-35.
Macey Gandee pulled the Lady Hornets into a tie at 41 with an put back of her own at the 5:48 mark. There would be two ties and two lead changes over the next four minutes. Emporia State closed the quarter on a 9-0 run over the final 38 seconds to take control of the game.
Gracie Gilpin started the run with her second three-pointer of the game to tie Andrea Leiker for eighth on the Emporia State career list followed by a steal and layup form Reese with 21 seconds left. Following a technical on the Hawks bench Gilpin hit both free throws and Gandee scored inside to make it 60-50 headed into the fourth quarter. The Lady Hornets stretched the lead to 19 points with 4:23 left on a Gandee layup before coasting to the 13 point win.
Kaitlyn Sanders, the reigning MIAA Player of the Week, led four Lady Hornets in double figures with 21 points while dishing five assists.
Allison Reese had her first double-double as a Lady Hornet with 12 points and ten rebounds while matching Sanders with five assists.
Macey Gandee and
Gracie Gilpin each scored 12 points as well.
UP NEXT
The Lady Hornets will open up MIAA play on Thursday, December 4 when they travel to Northwest Missouri. Tip-off from Bearcat Arena in Maryvile, Mo. is set for 5:30 p.m.
