The Lady Hornets play host to Quincy in the first meeting between the two schools, both of which have first year coaches.
ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State is 2-2 on the season and have played the 22nd toughest schedule in the nation. MIAA Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Sanders is the leading scorer for the Lady Hornets at 19.5 points per game while
Gracie Gilpin is 11.5 points per game.
ABOUT THE HAWKS
Quincy is 3-1 on the year with the lone loss to Missouri Southern. Katey Flynn is averaging 20.3 points per game while Hampton Williams is their leading rebounder at 6.8 per game. They advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.
ABOUT THE COACHES
MJ Baker is 2-2 in her first season with the Lady Hornets and is 53-48 in her fourth year as a head coach at a four year institution. She has won 335 games as a collegiate coach and comes to Emporia State after an eight year run at Eastern Florida State College. She went 183-58 with three conference championships and three trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament during her time. This is her first meeting with Quincy.
Ali Schwagmeyer-Belger is 3-1 in her first year at Quincy. This is her first meeting with Emporia State.
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE HAWKS
This is the first meeting between Emporia State and Quincy. The Lady Hornets have won three of their last four games against teams from the GLVC. They have not lost a game in White Auditorium to a GLVC team since a loss to then #2 Drury on November 20, 2021.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Hornets and Miners were tied 66-66 with just over three minutes remaining before an 8-0 scoring run by Emporia State propelled the Lady Hornets to a 78-72 win.
After the Miners took a 15-14 lead, the Hornets scored five of the final six points of the first quarter to take a 19-16 lead into the second. The Lady Hornets built a 29-19 lead in the second before a 13-6 Miner run trimmed the lead to just 35-32 entering halftime. ESU shot just 5-17 from the floor in the third period, while the Miners shot nearly 50% on their way to taking a 51-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Missouri S&T led 65-62 with just under six minutes remaining when Emporia State went on a 12-1 run, that included eight of a game-high 24 points by
Kaitlyn Sanders, as the Lady Hornets led 74-66 with 39 seconds remaining. Sanders and Gilpin both made a pair of free throws in the final 17 seconds to close out a 78-72 win in the home opener.
Kaitlyn Sanders led all scorers with 24 points.
Macey Gandee and
Gracie Gilpin joined Sanders in double-figures with 12 and 11 respectively. Gandee and
Makenzie McDaniel tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each.
