LET'S GET IT STARTED
The Lady Hornets will open their 52nd season of intercollegiate competition, and the first under head coach
MJ Baker, at the site of their 2010 National Championship win as they play in the Central Regional Showcase in the St. Joseph Civic Arena. Emporia State is 40-11 all-time in season openers.
ABOUT THE LADY HORNETS
Emporia State went 10-19, 5-14 in the MIAA last year which included a top ten win over Northwest Missouri in the first game of MIAA action.
Gracie Gilpin is the leading returning scorer for Emporia State, as she averaged 12.5 points while shooting 38.2% from beyond the arc last season. Other key returners for the Lady Hornets include
Makenzie McDaniel,
Elizabeth Tjaden and
Macey Gandee who all scored over 5.0 points per game.
ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Wayne State went 11-16, 8-14 in the NSIC last season. They were picked 13th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll and seventh in the South Division. The Wildcats bring back two starters in Kylah vanDonkersgoed and senior guard Meg Rietz.
ABOUT THE DRAGONS
MSU-Moorhead went 14-16 overall and 11-11 in the NSIC last season. They were picked seventh in the NSIC overall but were the choice to win the North Division. The Dragons return four starters led by second-team All-NSIC post player Terryn Johnson.
ABOUT THE COACHES
MJ Baker is in her first season with the Lady Hornets and is 51-46 in her fourth year as a head coach at a four year institution. She has won 334 games as a collegiate coach and comes to Emporia State after an eight year run at Eastern Florida State College. She went 183-58 with three conference championships and three trips to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament during her time. This is her first meeting with Wayne State and MSU-Moorhead.
Brian Ortmeier is in his first year at Wayne State and is 80-24 in his fourth season overall. This is his first meeting with Emporia State.
Karla Nelson is 426-273 in her 26th season at MSU-Moorhead. This is her first meeting with Emporia State.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lady Hornets lead the all-time series with Wayne State 24-7 and have won seven of the last eight meetings. The two were members of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC) from 1977-90.
LAST TIME VS WAYNE STATE
The Lady Hornets led for nearly 33 minutes on their way to an 87-82 win despite 13 made threes from the visiting Wayne State Wildcats.
Faith Paramore scored a game-high 23 points while shooting four of seven from the arc and seven of eight from the free throw line. Paramore also had six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Katie Horyna had 18 points on seven of 12 shooting and had a team-high six rebounds and six assists.
Gracie Gilpin and
Makenzie McDaniel each had 10 points.

This will be the first meeting between the Lady Hornets and Minnesota State-Moorhead.
