TIME TO GO
Emporia State opens up their 122nd season of men's basketball at the Hillyard Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. The season opener will be against Wayne State (Neb.) on Friday followed by a contest with St. Cloud State on Saturday. It is the second straight year the Hornets and Wildcats have opened the season against each other.  

ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State went 11-18 last season, with an 8-11 record in MIAA action, which included six losses by five or fewer points. Chris Harris is the leading returning scorer for the Hornets, averaging 7.3 points on 36.5% shooting from three last season. Other notable returners include Dallas Bear, Devin Conley and Justin Mack. They went 7-4 to close the regular season last year.  The Hornets were slated for ninth in the MIAA Preseason Media Poll and tenth by the coaches.

ABOUT THE WILDCATS
Wayne State went 16-13, 10-12 in the NSIC last season. The Wildcats return two starters in JJ Ferrin and Matt Noll. They were picked tenth overall and eigfhth in the South Division of the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll.

ABOUT THE HUSKIES
St. Cloud State went 20-12, 15-7 in the NSIC last season.  They will return four of their five starters from a year ago.  Luke Winkel earned First Team All-NSIC honors as a freshman last year. The Huskies were picked second overall and in the South Division of the NSIC Preseason Coaches Poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES
Tom Billeter is 501-292 in his 28th season as a head coach and is 11-18 in his second season at Emporia State after going 394-224 in 21 years at Augustana. With the Vikings he won the 2016 National Championship, went to nine NCAA Tournaments, won three regular season NSIC Championships, two NSIC Tourney Championships, and 18 consecutive winning seasons. 
He is 25-11 in his career against Wayne State, 0-1 while at Emporia State.
He is 26-17 in his career against St. Cloud State.
Jeff Kaminsky is 130-125 in his tenth year at Wayne State. He is 1-0 against Emporia State.
Quincy Henderson is 42-47 in his fourth year at St. Cloud State. This is his first meeting with Emporia State

LAST TIME VS WAYNE STATE
Emporia State led for over 30 minutes but Wayne State got a bucket from Sean Stokes with 4.1 seconds left as the Wildcats came away with a 67-66 win in game one of the Hillyard Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. last season.
The Hornets led 35-29 at the half but the Wildcats opened the second half on a 16-6 run to take a 45-41 lead with 14:21 left. Emporia State responded with a 9-0 run of their own to go up 50-45 with 11:39 left. 
Brayson Laube led Emporia State with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Malik Edwards with 12 points as 11 Hornets scored in the game.  Donald Coats III led all rebounders with ten boards and added two blocks for the Hornets. Arhman Lewis added nine points and five assists.

SERIES HISTORY
Emporia State leads Wayne State  17-11 after last year's meeting.Prior to that the last meeting was in 1990 during the final season of the Central States Intercollegiate Conference.

LAST TIME VS ST CLOUD STATE
In a game that saw ten ties and six lead changes in the first 27 minutes, a 13-0 run by St. Cloud State proved to be the difference as Emporia State fell 87-77 to the Huskies in the MIAA-NSIC Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Hornets led 46-44 with 15:33 left when the Huskies went on the decisive 13-0 run to take a 57-46 lead with 9:41 remaining.  The lead would grow to 19 points before Emporia State went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to 75-66 with 2:37 left.  St. Cloud would hit five of six free throws in the final minute to seal the win. 
Terrence Moore led Emporia State with 24 points, six rebounds and three steals.  He was joined in double figures by Micah Swank with 12 and Jevon Taylor with 11 points.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the third meeting between Emporia State and St. Cloud State in men's basketball.  St. Cloud State won 77-71 during the 1954-55 season and 87-77 in the 2014-15 season in Las Vegas.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will make their season debut on Slaymaker Court at White Auditorium on Wednesday, November 19 when they play host to William Jewell. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m..
