FIRST TIME
Emporia State makes their first regular season appearance at the MWSU Cross Country Course as they compete in the Griffon Invitational in St. Joseph, Mo. It will not be the first time the Hornets have run on the course as last year's MIAA Championships were hosted by Missouri Western. The Hornets and host Griffons will be joined by fellow MIAA member Northwest Missouri in the field of teams.
LAST RUN
The Emporia State cross country teams came away with a pair of top ten finishes in the Gold Division of the Greeno-Dirksen Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. The Hornet women placed seventh and the men tenth on Saturday morning.
Mason Bina finished in 46th place overall with a time of 19:06.91 to continue to pace the Emporia State women. Broolyn Nolte was the second Hornet finisher with time of 19:32.41 to place 66th,
Emma Bartholome placed 19:36.32 to finish in 70th place, Elizabeth Wilhite was 99th with a time of 20:04.23 and
Heidi Grimmett rounded out the Emporia State scoring with a time of 21:22.61 to finish in 161st place. There were 231 finishers in the women's race.
Dylan Hunter was the top finisher for the Hornet men running 26:06.55 over the eight kilometers course to place 70th overall.
Carson Fouard ran 26:48.35 to place 113th while
Treyton Laurance was 121st in 26:55.77,
Evan Benoit ran 27:01.73 to place 127th and
Jack Harty ran 27:10.86 to finish in 135th place and round out the Emporia State scoring. There were 315 finishers in the men's race.
THE COACH
Justin Hill is in his second year as head cross country coach at Emporia State and will be in charge of the middle distance and distance runners for the Hornet track and field program. Hill was the director of operations and assistant cross country coach for the Hornets from 2021-24. He served as meet director for Emporia State's regular season home meets in addition to overseeing the operational aspects of the Hornet cross country and track and field programs.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The four of the top five finishers for the Hornets at each meet this year have been either freshmen or sophomores. Sophomore
Dylan Hunter picked up where he left off last year and has been the top placer for Emporia State while sophomore
Carson Fouard was the second finisher for the Hornet men in both races. Senior
Treyton Laurance was the third runner at the Greeno-Dirksen Invitational. Freshman
Evan Benoit as the foruth runner in Nebraska while
Lucas Kreutzer was the third runner for ESU at the JK Gold.
Mason Bina has led the Hornets for eight straight meets dating back to last season. Freshman
Brooklyn Nolte was the second runner in Nebraska with junior
Elizabeth Willhite the second runner in Wichita for the Emporia State women. Sophomore
Emma Bartholome finished third for ESU at the Greeno-Dirksen and fourth at the JK Gold meet.
LAST TIME IN ST. JOE
This will be the first time Emporia State has competed in the regular season in St. Joseph.
The Hornets did compete at the 2024 MIAA Championships in St. Joseph, Mo. as the women finished eighth and the men finished in tenth place.
The women finished in eighth place, just finishing ahead of Central Missouri in ninth by just two points. Emporia State's top finisher was
Mason Bina in 54th, as she ran 23:41.43. Just behind Bina was
Catherine Lyon in 57th, running 23:53.04. The final three Hornets in the top five were
Madeline Martin in 80th,
Emma Bartholome in 81st and
Koe Schultz in 83rd.
In the men's race, the Hornets finished in tenth place, and were led by
Dylan Hunter who finished 40th with a time of 25:07.11.
Luke Gleason was just 20 seconds back of Hunter, running 25:27.75 and finishing 57th.
Treyton Laurance,
Cooper Schroer and
Sam McDavitt rounded out the top five finishers for the Hornets as they slotted in at 81st, 90th and 91st place.

Emporia State will travel to Hays, Kan. for the FHSU Open on October 11. The men will run at 9:15 a.m with the women to follow at 10:00 a.m. on the Tiger Cross Country Course.
