POST SEASON TIME
Emporia State heads to Joplin, Mo. for the  NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships on the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course on Saturday. The women will be running six kilometers starting at 10:00 a.m. with the men running ten kilometers starting at 11:00 a.m. There are five men's teams and seven women's team ranked in the top 30 nationally scheduled to compete in the Central Region.

LAST RUN
The Emporia State cross country teams each finished in ninth place at the MIAA Championships in Pittsburg, Kan.
Dylan Hunter had the top individual finish for Emporia State, placing 30th with a time of 25:52.01 in the men's eight kilometer race.  Treyton Laurance was 52nd in a time of 26:33.47 while Carson Fouard ran 27:13.38 to place 73rd overall. Jack Harty was 82nd in 27:50.19 and Elijah Edwards ran 27:51.68 to place 84th to round out the Hornets scoring.  Lucas Kreutzer was 85th in a time of 27:56.75 and Gage Chapman ran 28:10.33 to place 88th for the Hornets.
Emma Bartholome was the top finisher for the Emporia State women.  She ran 23:55.90 to place 64th and Mason Bina followed her with a time of 24:07.14 to place 68th over the six kilometers. Brooklyn Nolte was 70th in a time of 24:15.85 with Elizabeth Willhite running 24:35.36 to place 75th and Valerie Freeman clocking 25:16.68 for an 82nd place showing to round out the women's scoring.  Heidi Grimmett was 90th with a time of 25:36.67 and Koe Schultz placed 99th with a time of 25:36.67 for Emporia State. 

THE COACH
Justin Hill is in his second year as head cross country coach at Emporia State and will be in charge of the middle distance and distance runners for the Hornet track and field program. Hill was the director of operations and assistant cross country coach for the Hornets from 2021-24. He served as meet director for Emporia State's regular season home meets in addition to overseeing the operational aspects of the Hornet cross country and track and field programs.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The Hornets have had at least three freshmen or sophomores in the top five at each meet this year. Dylan Hunter was the top placer for Emporia State in the first two races and again at the FHSU Tiger Open and the MIAA Championships. Senior Treyton Laurance led the Hornets at the Griffon Invite, was second at the Tiger Open and MIAA Championships and was the third runner at the Greeno-Dirksen Invitational. Carson Fouard was the second finisher for the Hornet men in the first three races and was the third finisher at the MIAA Championships. 
Mason Bina had led the Hornets in nine straight meets dating back to last season prior to the FHSU Tiger Open. Emma Bartholome was the top finisher for ESU at the MIAA Championships and finished second for ESU at the Tiger Open, was third at the Greeno-Dirksen and Griffon Invite and was fourth at the JK Gold meet. Brooklyn Nolte moved into the top spot in Hays after being  the second runner in the previous two races.  

LAST TIME AT THE NCAA REGIONALS
The 2024 cross country season came to an end for Emporia State at the NCAA Division II Central Regional Championships at the Tom Rutledge Course in Joplin, Mo.  The women placed 26th while the Hornet men placed 27th overall. Dylan Hunter was the top finisher for the Hornets placing 101st with a time of 32:52.48 over the ten kilometers. Luke Gleason ran 32:56.03 to place 105th while Treyton Laurance was 159th with a time of 34:21.16.  Gage Chapman placed 183rd and Ethan Finney was 197th to round out the Hornet scoring. Mason Bina again led the women's team, finishing in a time of 23:22.46 over the six kilometers.  Catherine Lyons was the second Hornet to come across in 23:54.97 to finish in 143rd place.  Madelin Martin ran 24:35.99 to place 159th as the third Emporia State finisher.  Elizabeth Willhite as 176th and Emma Bartholome was 184th to round out the women's scoring.

UP NEXT
The National Championships are set for November 22 in Kenosha, Wis. The indoor track & field season is set to begin on December 6 at the WU Invitational in Topeka.

HOW TO GET TO NATIONALS
The top three teams at the regional along with any individual in the top five and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team will automatically qualify for the national championships. An additional ten at large teams and at least eight individuals will be selected to advance to the national meet as well.
There is no limit to the number of at-large teams that may be selected from any given region. 

HOW TOUGH IS IT?
There are six women's teams and five men'ts teams from the Central Region ranked in the USTFCCCA National Top 30. The MIAA alone has four women's teams and three men's teams in the top 30. The MIAA and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) are the only leagues with at least three teams ranked in both the men's and women's polls.
In the Central Regional Rankings, the MIAA men have the top three positions and six of ten spots while the women take up three of the top four and six of the top ten rankings.

MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
The MIAA released the 2025 Cross Country Coaches Polls and the Emporia State women are ranked eighth and the men tenth to start the season.
The Hornet men return three of their top four runners from last season.  Sophomore Dylan Hunter was the top finisher for Emporia State at both the MIAA Championships and the NCAA Central Regional.
Three of the top five Emporia State women return led by Mason Bina. The senior was the top finisher for Emporia State in all six of her races last season.
