Emporia State Soccer Falls Against Minnesota State in Season Opener

Hornets drop season opener 3-0 against Mavericks on Friday afternoon

September 6, 2024 – Emporia State soccer fell in their season opener 3-0, in a road matchup against Minnesota State on Friday afternoon.
 
The Hornets faced an early barrage of shot attempts through the first 15 minutes, including two attempts on goal that forced saves from goalkeeper Mackenzi Goen, before Minnesota State finally broke through in the 20th minute with goal scored on their second corner kick of the match.
 
Following the goal, Emporia State gained some traction in the match, recording three shots to just one for the Mavericks over the next 15 minutes. The Hornets entered the halftime break trailing 1-0.
 
In the first half, Emporia State was outshot 11-3 and allowed three Maverick corner kicks.
 
In the second half, Minnesota State quickly grabbed a second goal just two minutes out of the break as Emporia State fell behind 2-0 in the 47th minute. Despite a pair of shots for the Hornets over the next 15 minutes, Emporia State was unable to break through the Maverick defense before the hosts scored their third goal of the match in the 69th minute on a header in the box.
 
The Hornets generated two shots on goal in the final ten minutes to force a pair of saves from the Minnesota State goalkeeper but were held without a goal as Emporia State fell 3-0 against the Mavericks on Friday afternoon.
 
Abby Bachman had three shots while Lily Simpson, Paige Putter, Hailey Gancarz and Mikhaela Goen each had one of their own. Mackenzi Goen had six saves for the Hornets.
 
Emporia State will return to action on Sunday, September 8 as they take on Southwest Minnesota State. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Mankato, Minn.
