September 8, 2024 – Emporia State soccer picked up their first win of the
Jane Grimley-Gunn era on Sunday with a 3-0 win against Southwest Minnesota State.
The matchup between the Hornets and Mustangs got off to a quick start as Southwest Minnesota recorded a shot in the first 30 seconds. Emporia State gained some control of the match as the Hornets recorded five shots in the first 20 minutes of the match, with two forcing a save from the Mustangs goalkeeper.
Late in the first half, with the scored tied 0-0, Emporia State earned a throw-in near the corner flag with about ten seconds remaining. After a deflection by the Mustangs in the box, the ball fell to
Megan Jeremias who volleyed the ball past the goalkeeper into the bottom right corner with one second on the clock to put the Hornets ahead 1-0.
In the first half, the Hornets had seven shots with four attempts on goal while the Mustangs had five shots, with three forcing a save from
Mackenzi Goen.
Following the break, both teams recorded a shot in the first five minutes and after a second shot by the Mustangs in the 56th minute, Emporia State added to their lead with two goals just one minute apart. In the 58th minute,
Abby Bachman broke down the left wing and played in a cross that was deflected by the Mustangs and resulted in an own goal to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.
One minute later, the Hornets won a corner on the right side of the field, allowing Bachman to take the kick for Emporia State. Bachman played the corner over the head of the Mustangs goalkeeper to score directly from the corner and put the Hornets ahead 3-0.
Emporia State controlled the final 30 minutes of the match, adding five more shots to their total while keeping Southwest Minnesota without a shot. The Hornets were unable to add to their total but clinched the 3-0 win for their first win of the season.
The Hornets outshot the Mustangs 14-8 with seven shots for Emporia State in each half.
Megan Jeremias and
Abby Bachman each scored for the Hornets, with both recording their first career goals.
Emporia State will return to action on September 13 as they travel to Bismarck, ND to take on Northern State. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
