September 28, 2024 – Despite dropping the first set, Emporia State Volleyball rallied to take down Northwest Missouri in four sets as three Hornets recorded double-digit kills.
Early in the first set, neither the Hornets nor Bearcats gained an advantage until later in the set when Emporia State built a 20-15 lead. A spurt from Northwest Missouri cut the lead to 22-20 before a kill from
Weronika Wrzesinska restored a three-point lead. The Bearcats then rallied to score five straight and steal the first set from the Hornets 25-23.
Emporia State bounced back in the second set and never trailed as they evened the match with a 25-18 win in the frame. The Hornets closed the set on a 9-3 run which featured four kills from
Rayishon Jackman.
After a quick start in the third to build a 9-5 lead, the Hornets conceded five quick points as the Bearcats took a 10-9 advantage, their first since the first set. Emporia State restored their lead with a 9-3 scoring run before clinching the third set 25-19.
In the fourth, Emporia State sustained their momentum, building a 13-7 midway through the set. Late in the set, with the Hornets leading 21-19, the Bearcats scored five straight and were one point from forcing a final fifth set. Three straight kills by Jackman followed by a Bearcat error gave the Hornets a 25-24 lead. Following a kill by Northwest Missouri, Emporia State scored back-to-back points to clinch the set 27-25 and the 3-1 win over the Bearcats.
Rayishon Jackman recorded a match-high 23 kills while
Weronika Wrzesinska and
Camilla Ossola had 16 and 11 kills respectively.
Brailee Bogle had 48 assists and 15 digs, one of five Hornets to reach double-figure digs in the match.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, October 4 as they play their home opener against Pittsburg State. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
