August 22, 2024 - #17 Emporia State soccer took on Kansas City in an exhibition match on Thursday night as the Hornets fell 2-0 against the Roos.
The Hornets struggled to gain traction early in the match as the Roos settled into possession. Following a pair of corner kicks in the fifth minute, the hosts recorded their first shot attempt in the seventh minute on a shot from Adriana Benassi, resulting in the opening goal of the match. The first shot for Emporia State came in the 12th minute on a free kick from
Haley Sparks. Roughly 30 yards from goal, Sparks' shot went above the crossbar. Kansas City continued to apply pressure to the Hornet defense throughout the first half but Emporia State held strong, keeping the score at 1-0 heading into the halftime break.
In the first half, Kansas City out shot the Hornets 8-1 with two shots on goal for the Roos.
Emporia State came out aggressive after the break, pushing into the Roos defensive half through the first ten minutes. Despite the push, the Hornets were unable to generate any shots on the Kansas City goal. After the early push by the Hornets, Kansas City again gained control of the match, recording six shots and two shots on goal over the first 30 minutes of the half, forcing two saves from the Hornet goalkeeper,
Mackenzi Goen. The Roos were able to double their advantage in the 81st minute as Benassi scored her second of the match.
The second shot for the Hornets came in the 83rd minute, as an attempt from
Abby Bachman on the left side of the box went to the right of goal.
Mackenzi Goen added two more saves to her total in the final seven minutes as Emporia State fell 2-0 against Kansas City on Thursday evening.
Eighteen Hornets saw action in the match with
Haley Sparks and
Abby Bachman each recording a shot.
Mackenzi Goen tallied five saves in the match. Emporia State was out shot by the Roos 19-2 in the match.
Emporia State will begin their regular season on Friday, September 6 as they travel to Mankato, MN to take on Minnesota State.
