March 2, 2024 - The Lady Hornets dropped their regular season finale as they fell to Washburn 59-58 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Washburn got the scoring started with five straight points in the opening minute as the Lady Hornets fell behind 5-0. Emporia State responded with a 15-2 scoring run over the next six minutes, which included eight points from
Faith Paramore and was capped off by a three from
Allie Ostermann as the Lady Hornets led 15-7 with 3:14 remaining in the first.
Washburn scored the final four points of the quarter, but the Lady Hornets led 15-11 heading to the second.
In the second quarter, both teams struggled offensively, with the Lady Hornets and Ichabods combining for just seven field goals as Emporia State held onto a 22-19 lead entering the halftime break.
In the first half,
Faith Paramore had a team-high 10 points as the Lady Hornets shot 8-28 from the floor and just 2-9 from three.
Following the break, the Lady Hornets opened the second half with six straight points from
Faith Paramore to build a 28-19 lead at the 8:21 mark of the third. Over the next four minutes, Washburn cut the Lady Hornet lead to 31-28 before Emporia State put together a 13-3 scoring run as they led 44-31 with 1:33 remaining in the third, their largest lead of the game.
Washburn scored the final four points of the third to make the score 44-35 and continued their run into the fourth. The Ichabods scored the first seven points of the fourth to cap an 11-0 scoring run as the Lady Hornets called timeout with 8:12 remaining with a 44-42 lead.
After a pair of baskets from
Tylieea Wallace to put Emporia State ahead 48-42 with 5:32 left, Washburn eventually tied the game 48-48 with 42 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, a
Katie Horyna layup with 28.4 remaining gave the Lady Hornets a 50-48 lead. The Ichabods responded with a layup of their own with 19.3 left to tie the game. Neither team was able to score and break the deadlock as the game went into overtime with Emporia State and Washburn knotted at 50.
The Lady Hornets and Ichabods traded points throughout the overtime period with Emporia State leading 58-56 with 1:18 left following a layup from
Katie Horyna. Washburn knocked down a three with 54 seconds left to take a 59-58 lead over the Lady Hornets. After a miss from either time, the Lady Hornets gained possession and called timeout with 13 seconds remaining. On the final possession for Emporia State, a layup from
Katie Horyna rolled off the rim in the final seconds and after a jump ball, the Lady Hornets regained possession with 0.6 seconds left but were unable to get a shot off.
The Lady Hornets fell to Washburn 59-58 to close their regular season.
Faith Paramore finished with a game-high 20 points and had a team-high six rebounds.
Tylieea Wallace had 16 points on 7-12 shooting.
Emporia State finished ninth in the regular season and will take on Northeastern State in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament. The Lady Hornets matchup with the Riverhawks is set for Wednesday, March 6 at 12:00 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
