Three-Point Barrage Leads Lady Hornets to 72-58 Win Over Northeastern State

Emporia State advances to MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals

March 6, 2024-The Lady Hornets scored the first 13 points and never looked back in a 72-58 win over Northeastern State in the first round of the MIAA Tournament on Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo.
 
Faith Paramore hit back to back three-pointers, had a blocked shot and a rebound in the first 77 seconds to get Emporia State started.  The Lady Hornets went up 13-0 on a Katie Horyna put back with 6:42 left in the quarter.  The RiverHawks answered with an 11-0 run of their own to get within two points with 4:06 left but The Lady Hornets answered with another 6-0 run and took a 19-14 lead after one quarter.
 
The lead stayed between two and four points for the first part of the second quarter with Emporia State leading 23=21 with 7:12 left.  Stevie Stinchcomb and Horyna then hit back to back three-pointers followed by a Paramore layup to give ESU a 31-21 lead and force a RiverHawk timeout with 5:44 remaining in the half. Emily Weathers scored for Northeastern State with 4:43 left to make it 31-26.  The Lady Hornets answered with another 6-0 run to go up 37-26 with 2:12 left in the half and took a 39-29 lead to the locker room.
 
The Lady Hornets shot .517 from the field and hit five of ten three pointers in the opening 20 minutes while holding the RiverHawks to just .370 shooting. 
 
The second half started out much like the first with Emporia State scoring the first eight points to take a 47-29 lead with 8:32 left.  The lead would not drop below 14 points the rest of the game as the Lady Hornets went up by as many as 20 with 2:22 left before the RiverHawks scored the final six points.
 
Katie Horyna scored a career-high 25 poitns on seven of ten shooting from the field with seven assists and five rebounds.  Faith Paramore added 21 points and ten rebounds for her 13th double-double of the season. As a team Emporia State went ten of 19 from the three-point arc while outrebounding Northeastern State 40-28.
 
Emporia State will take on top seeded Missouri Western on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament. Tip-off from Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City is set for 12:00 p.m.

The Lady Hornets are now 48-19 (.716) all-time in the MIAA Tournament.
