Top 20 Win For Men Highlights split for Emporia State Tennis in Florida

Hornet men defeat #19 Lubbock Christian, women fall 7-0 to #12 Angelo State

March 12, 2024-The Emporia State men's tennis team picked up their first Top 20 win in their NCAA era with a 4-3 victory over #19 Lubbock Christian on Tuesday in Altamonte Springs, Fla.  The Hornet women fell 7-0 to #12 Angelo State in Orlando, Fla.

The Hornets won their first dual over a Top 20 team since joining the NCAA with a 4-3 victory over #19 Lubbock Christian. 
Diego Calvo and Lleyton Fosha got the Hornets started on a good note with a 7-5 victory at #3 doubles.  The Chaps evened things when 29th ranked Herman Aguirre and Pablo Segura defeated Harrison Brown and Elvin Selimovic 6-4 at the #2 position.  The deciding match went to a tie breaker before LCU's Martins Abuma and Tristan Vigneron won 7-6 (7-5) over Anton Sarunic and Mostafa Elbasnaly to secure the doubles point.
Emporia State evened the dual when #58 Anton Sarunic defeated #61 Vigneron 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles. Harrison Brown gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #5. A 6-2, 6-4 win by 29th ranked Martins Abamu over Sergio Vera Martin pulled LCU back into a tie. The final three matches would all go to a third set tiebreaker.  Diego Calvo put the Hornets back in front with a 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6) win at #4 singles before Mattia Ghedin defeated Mostafa Elbasnaly 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) at #3 singles to tie things at 3-3.  Hachen Fahem gave the Hornets their sixth win of the season with a come from behind 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win at #6 singles to clinch the victory.
 
#12 ASU 7, ESU 0
The first set of all six women's matches went to a tiebreaker but the Hornet women could not pull out any wins in a 7-0 loss to 12th ranked Angelo State.
The Rambelles won all three of the doubles matches by 6-3 scores to go up 1-0. 
Two of the singles matches would go to a third set.  Giovanna Ferreira fell 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 1-0 (13-11) at #2 singles while Paige Stranghoner lost 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) at the #6 position.  Perla Conde at #1 and Lilie Bizourne at #3 both fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.  Anastasia Pesic lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at #5 singles and Angelina Gnezdilova fell 7-5 (8-6), 6-0 at #4 singles.
 
Both the Emporia State men and women are scheduled to play NCAA Division I opponents on Thursday. The men play Lehigh University at 11:30 a.m. (CT) and the women play Lafayette College at 5:00 p.m. (CT) at the USTA National Campus in Orland, Fla.
 
NOTE:
Emporia State was scheduled to play matches on Monday, but inclement weather on the East Coast Sunday night canceled the Hornets flight.  They were finally able to fly out on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
