Saturday Split For Hornet Baseball Against Orediggers

Emporia State takes game one 2-0; falls 10-1 in game two against Colorado School of Mines

February 10, 2024 – Emporia State baseball split their Saturday doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines from Glennen Field. Emporia State took game one 2-0 and fell 10-1 in game two.

Game 1
The Orediggers looked to jump ahead in the top of the first with a leadoff double on the first pitch from Emporia State starter Ian Lanik. Despite a sacrifice bunt from Mines, Lanik used a strikeout and a groundout to strand the runner and keep the game knotted 0-0.

The game settled into a pitcher's duel as Emporia State tallied just two hits in the first five innings while Lanik kept the Orediggers without a hit following the one allowed in the first inning.

Emporia State broke through the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth.

Joe Daneff singled up the middle to start the inning and after a walk from TJ Racherbaumer, Patryk Hernandez doubled down the left field line to score Daneff and put two runners in scoring position. Three batters later with the bases loaded and one out, Mason Sturdy drove in Racherbaumer with a sacrifice fly to put the Hornets ahead 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, Ian Lanik returned to the mound and retired Mines to clinch the 2-0 win in game one.

Lanik pitched seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed.

Mason Sturdy and Patryk Hernandez each recorded an RBI for the Hornets.

Game 2
After a scoreless first inning, Colorado School of Mines scored a pair of runs in the second on three hits and a Hornet error. In the bottom of the second, Emporia State would push a run across on a two-out RBI single from Drew Jennings to make the score 2-1.

The Orediggers would add three more runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead that the visitors continued to grow throughout the game. Colorado School of Mines totaled 16 hits in the game.

Emporia State managed eight hits and advanced a runner into scoring position three times over the final seven innings but were unable to add to their total as the Hornets fell 10-1 in game two of the doubleheader.

Patryk Hernandez went 2-4 in game two while Mason Sturdy had a double in the second and Dom Oliverio had a triple in the ninth.

Emporia State will continue their homestand with a four-game series against CSU-Pueblo on February 16-18. Game one of the series against the Thunderwolves is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16.
