Hornet Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader Against CSU-Pueblo

Emporia State falls 6-1 in game one; takes down Thunderwolves 13-3 in game two

February 17, 2024 – Emporia State baseball split their Saturday doubleheader against CSU-Pueblo from Glennen Field. The Hornets dropped game one 6-1 before bouncing back with a 13-3 win in game two against the Thunderwolves.
 
Game 1
CSU-Pueblo opened game one with a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles as they took an early 2-0 lead over the Hornets.
 
In the bottom half, Emporia State used two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out before TJ Racherbaumer go the Hornets on the board with a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 2-1.
 
Over the next four innings, both teams were held scoreless before CSU-Pueblo broke through for another run in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI double.
 
Following a scoreless bottom half for the Hornets, the Thunderwolves added three more runs with two outs in the seventh to build a 6-1 lead.
 
The Hornets went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh as they fell 6-1 against the Thunderwolves in game one.
 
Cade Barton pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
 
Game 2
For the second straight game, the Thunderwolves scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead over the Hornets.
 
Emporia State responded in the bottom half, scoring seven runs on eight hits.
 
Patryk Hernandez got the scoring started with an RBI single to tie the game and was followed two batters later by TJ Racherbaumer who delivered a two RBI single into left center to put Emporia State ahead 3-1.
 
Two batters later, with two outs in the inning, Logan Myers delivered a three-run home run, the first of his career to extend the lead to 6-1. Kadyn Williams capped off the seven-run inning with an RBI single as the Hornets led 7-1 through one inning.
 
Following a scoreless second inning for both teams, CSU-Pueblo scored their second run on an RBI double before the Hornets responded in the bottom half. Logan Myers singled and after a defensive error from the Thunderwolves, Jake Bucovetsky came around to score from first.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Patryk Hernandez boosted the Hornet lead to 9-2 with his second RBI single of the game.
 
After a scoreless top of the fifth from reliever Trent Warstler, the Hornets added two more runs in the bottom half. Logan Myers led off the inning with his second home run of the game before Andrew Rantz went back-to-back with a solo home run of his own to expand the lead to 11-2.
 
The final run for the Thunderwolves came in the top of the seventh before the Hornets capped off the 13-3 win in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Logan Myers capped off his career-best game with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Andrew Rantz gave Emporia State the 13-3 win in game two.
 
Logan Myers went 4-5 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs scored. Patryk Hernandez with 4-5 with two RBI while Andrew Rantz and Kadyn Williams each went 3-4.
 
Graham Brunner got the win and allowed two runs and one earned with nine strikeouts. Trent Warstler allowed one run across three relief innings and Eli Hernandez pitched a scoreless eighth frame with two strikeouts.
