Men's Basketball | 12/30/2024 10:56:00 AM
December 30, 2024-For the first time since the 1985-86 season, an Emporia State men's basketball game will be available on over-the-air television when the Hornets play host to #2 Washburn on Saturday, January 4 in White Auditorium. The broadcast will begin at 1:30 p.m. on 38 The Spot in the Kansas City area with tip off from Slaymaker Court scheduled for 1:40 p.m. The Lady Hornet game with Washburn will follow at approximately 4:00 p.m.
This will be the first time an Emporia State men's game has been on television since a 94-86 Hornet victory over Washburn on February 18, 1986. The Lady Hornets have had two home games broadcast on television since then, a 74-67 Emporia State win over Washburn on February 17, 2007 that was aired nationwide on CSTV followed by a 66-60 Ichabod win on January 15, 2011 on the MIAA Broadcasting Network on KSMO in Kansas City.
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association has announced that Scripps Media and their independent television station KMCI, serving the Kansas City metropolitan area, will continue its MIAA TV Game of the Week broadcasts throughout the 2025 NCAA Division II basketball season.
"Our team is thrilled to have the MIAA back on 38 The Spot to kick off 2025," said Jeff Mulligan, station manager and news director for KSHB 41 and 38 The Spot. "Kansas City is such a passionate sports region, and the fans love to cheer on our local teams. To be able to offer the game of the week on 38 The Spot, that are free and over-the-air, will provide a great opportunity for our audience to capture every amazing moment. Following our great football partnership this fall, we are excited to be able to offer extended and exclusive coverage on KSHB 41 across all platforms. This partnership solidifies our commitment to be the best spot for sports in our community and for the MIAA conference."
Beginning January 4 with the Turnpike Tussle, KMCI, 38 The Spot will broadcast NCAA Division II men's and women's basketball games from nine different MIAA campuses in January and February. The Lady Hornets game at Newman on February 22 will also be shown on TV. The schedule will finish with the live broadcast of the MIAA men's and women's championship games from the 2025 basketball tournament at Municipal Auditorium in downtown Kansas City on March 9. All MIAA basketball contests will continue to be streamed live on the MIAA Network.
"We are very excited to continue this television opportunity in the great metropolitan area to connect with the 120,000 MIAA alumni in Kansas City and spread awareness of the quality and competitiveness of MIAA basketball to college sports fans throughout this region," said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. "In addition, this agreement will also allow us to broadcast our MIAA championship games on 38 the Spot."
"We believe that this television platform and the exposure for our MIAA teams will continue to help drive new subscribers to the MIAA Network," Commissioner Racy added. "Like our MIAA Football TV Game of the Week, is a one-year trial that we hope could potentially into a long-term partnership with Scripps, and perhaps even include broadcasting other MIAA sports."
