Last Minute Equalizer Earns Hornet Soccer 1-1 Draw Against #15 Griffons

Hadlie Lowe scored with 55 seconds remaining to level the score; run unbeaten streak against Missouri Western to five matches

November 1, 2024 - In a match that featured 24 shots, 13 shots on goal and 17 fouls, a last minute goal from Hadlie Lowe gave the Hornets a point with a 1-1 tie against the 15th-ranked Griffons.

In the opening minute, Hadlie Lowe recorded the first shot of the match, which forced a save from the Missouri Western keeper Keeley Kroonenberg. The Hornets and Griffons played a back-and-forth match throughout the first half, with neither team scoring to move in front until the 36th minute, when Missouri Western struck first. Following a cross by Katelynn Rowland on the right side, Aidyn Woodall lifted a header over the Mackenzi Goen to put the Griffons ahead 1-0 with just under ten minutes until the halftime break. Emporia State was unable to generate any more chances as they trailed 1-0 through 45 minutes.

In the first half, Missouri Western held a slight 7-5 advantage in shots on goal, with a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.

After halftime, the intensity of the match continued, with Missouri Western recording the first shot of the half, which forced a strong save from Mackenzi Goen to force a corner kick by the Griffons. Emporia State had four shots in the first 20 minutes after the break, with all four attempts on goal, but continued to trail heading into the final 25 minutes of the match. With 90 seconds to play, the Hornets earned their fourth and final corner kick of the match, with this one proving most important. The corner from Abby Bachman cleared the initial group in the box before falling to Hadlie Lowe, who just like the goal for the Griffons in the first half, lifted the ball over the Griffons goalkeeper with 55 seconds left to tie the match at 1-1.

The Hornets held off one last push by Missouri Western to clinch the 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon at the ESU Pitch.

Hadlie Lowe's goal was her fourth of the season and the assist from Abby Bachman was also her fourth of the season. With the win, Emporia State has gone unbeaten with four wins and one tie against Missouri Western over their last five meetings.

Emporia State will be back in action on Sunday, November 3 as they travel to Maryville, Mo. for a matchup with Northwest Missouri. Kickoff between the Hornets and Bearcats is set for 1:00 p.m.
