Fort Hays State was on the front foot early in the match and took the lead over Emporia State in the seventh minute following a turnover by the Hornets deep in their own territory. Following the goal for the Tigers, Emporia State settled into the match and generated their first shot in the eighth minute, a shot on goal by

The Hornets provided most of the offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the first half, recording four corner kicks and forcing three saves from the Tigers goalkeeper. At the half, the Hornets outshot the Tigers 5-3 but still trailed 1-0 at the break.
Following halftime, the Hornets quickly broke through to tie the match 1-1. In the 48th minute, after long ball from
Mackenzi Goen into the midfield, the ball was played forward for
Sade Lee who eventually won possession in the box. After settling the ball, Lee crossed it to
Hadlie Lowe who headed the ball past the goalkeeper to even the match.
After the goal from Lowe, the Hornets and Tigers traded opportunities over the final 40 minutes but neither team was able to break the deadlock, resulting in a 1-1 draw between the Hornets and Tigers.
