September 8, 2023 – Emporia State Volleyball bounced back following their first set against Lake Superior State as the Hornets took down the Lakers 3-1 in their first match on Friday from the Missouri S&T Tournament.
Early in the first set, the Hornets trailed 8-5 before scoring four consecutive points to take the lead 9-8 over the Lakers. Lake Superior State responded to regain the lead and eventually pulled away from Emporia State as they took the first set 25-14.
Emporia State quickly bounced back in the second set as they scored five of the first six points to take a 5-1 lead. The Lakers bounced back to tie the set 6-6 before the Hornets regained the lead by putting together a 10-4 run to take a 16-10 lead. Lake Superior State fought back again, this time taking a 24-23 lead with a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Hornets capped the set with four of the final five points to take the set 27-25 and tie the match.
In set three, both teams went back and forth with the set eventually tied 17-17. Emporia State finally gained control and rattled off eight of the final nine points to clinch a 25-18 set three win and take a 2-1 match lead.
The Hornets were able to then build an early lead in set four and never looked back as the took set four 25-18 and clinch a 3-1 match victory over the Lakers.
Sandora Sasaki led all players with 19 kills on .333 hitting in the match. Eight more Hornet recorded multiple kills including
Winny Harris with six.
Brailee Bogle led the Hornets with both 33 assists and nine digs in the match.
Emporia State will return to action later this afternoon as they take on Kentucky Wesleyan. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
