KEEP IT ROLLING
Emporia State travels to Rolla, Mo. for a set of four matches at the Missouri S&T Tournament. 

LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets traveled to Kansas City, Mo. for the Kansas City Classic. Emporia State opened the tournament with three straight wins before ending the weekend 3-1. The 3-1 start for the Hornets is the best start to the season since 2014.

THE COACHES
Ken Murczek is 3-1 in his first season at ESU. Murczek is coming off great success at NAIA Oregon Tech where he brought the Owls to their first National Tournament in school history. Murczek is no stranger to the big stage, as he has coached at the NCAA I level, with head coaching tenures at Wake Forest and North Texas, and assistant positions at the University of Kansas, Purdue, Western Michigan, and San Diego State. 

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 3-1 through the opening weekend of the 2023 season and are outhitting opponents .225 to .186 through four matches. Sandora Sasaki leads the Hornets with 52 kills and earned MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and has 3.71 kills per set. Winny Harris has 28 kills through the middle to lead seven more Hornets with double-digit kills. Brailee Bogle has 122 assists with 8.71 assists per set which ranks fourth in the MIAA. Through the first four matches, Emporia State played 14 sets and 12 different Hornets played more than half through the opening weekend. 
SCOUTING THE MINERS
Missouri S&T is 1-2 this season with their win coming against MIAA foe Central Missouri in five sets. Missouri S&T finished last season 16-9 with a trip to the GLVC Tournament.

The series is tied 1-1 between the Hornets and Miners.

SCOUTING THE LAKERS
Lake Superior State is 0-4 this season and are coming off a 5-25 season in 2022.

This is the first meeting between the Hornets and Lakers.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Kentucky Wesleyan is 0-4 this season with one loss coming against the Hornets last weekend at the Kansas City Classic.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Union is 0-4 on the season despite posting a 22-10 record in 2022 with a trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will begin their 2023 MIAA schedule with their first home matches of the season as they take on Fort Hays State and Neb.-Kearney. Emporia State will take on the Tigers on Friday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
