LET'S GET IT STARTED
Emporia State travels to Joplin, Mo. to take part in the Southern Stampede on the campus of Missouri Southern. This will be the first countable meet for individual at large entries into the NCAA Division II National Championships and will be held on the site of the NCAA Central Regional.
MIAA PRESEASON POLLS
Emporia State had three top ten individual finishers at the JK Gold Cross Country Classic in Wichita, Kan.
Jaime Diaz was the top finisher for the Hornets. He placed sixth in a time of 18:33.96 over the six kilometer course in Clapp Park. He was joined in the men's top ten by
Tyler Swift who ran 18:45.76 to finish in ninth place.
Luke Gleason also cracked the top 20 for the Emporia State men, running 19:28.79 to finish in 20th place.
Tayler Williams was the top placer for the Emporia State women. She ran 19:22.10 to place ninth over the five kilometer course.
Catherine Lyon was the next Emporia State finisher, running 20:04.60 to place 15th overall.
In the team standings the Hornet men placed fourth while the Emporia State women finished in fifth place.
THE COACH
Dr.
Mark Stanbrough is in the sixth year of his return to Emporia State as an assistant coach in track and field in charge of the middle distance and distance runners and heads up the cross country program. Since his return he has coached one MIAA Champion in cross country and three on the track and has taken two individuals to the NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Stanbrough was the head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach for the Hornets from 1984-1992. During that span the Hornets were a national power with three top five national finishes in cross country. Stanbrough was named NAIA District 10 Coach of the Year 11 times, coached 28 Athletes to 60 NAIA All-American Honors, and coached eleven national champions. The cross country harriers had two top five national finishes, with the women national runner-ups and the men placing fifth.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Jaime Diaz led the Hornet men at the JK Gold Classic while
Tyler Swift joined him in the top ten with a sub-19 minute time over the six kilometers.
Tayler Williams had the top time for hte Emporia State women in Wichita, placing ninth with a time of 19:22.10 over the five kilometers.
In the 2023 MIAA Cross Country Preseason Coaches Polls the Hornet men are picked eighth in the association while the women are slated for tenth this fall.
Missouri Southern is the preseason favorite on the men's side while Pittsburg State is the top ranked team for the women.
LAST YEAR AT THE STAMPEDE
The Emporia State men finished tenth out of 20 scoring teams at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. The Hornet women placed 21st out of 25 teams.
Tyler Swift was the top finisher for the Emporia State men as he finished 49th with a time of 25:58.12.
Henry Jones came in just behind Swift with a 54th place finish and a time of 26:02.30.
Luke Gleason finished 61st with a time of 26:08.66.
Cody Achilles and
Jaime Diaz rounded out the top five finishes for the Hornets. Achilles was 69th with a time of 26:18.70 and Diaz finished 79th out of 261 finishers with a time of 26:29.90.
Tayler Williams was the top finisher for the Hornet women as she placed 46th with a time of 18:20.23.
Ayden Kearney was the second finisher for Emporia State with a time of 19:22.27 and a 105th place finish.
Mason Bina and
Catherine Lyon finished third and fourth for the Hornets. Bina placed 152nd running 19:58.79 while Lyon ran 20:11.61 to place 161st out of 251 finishers.
UP NEXT
Emporia State will travel to Columbia, Mo. for another Friday meet in two weeks. The Gans Creek Classic is hosted by the University of Missouri and will be run at Rock Bridge State Park. The women will run six kilometers while the men are slated to cover eight kilometers. NCAA Division I races will begin at 9:00 a.m. with open races slated to start at 10:30 a.m.
