March 24, 2023 – Emporia State baseball fell to Missouri Southern 13-0 on Friday as the Hornets were limited to just one hit and one walk against the Lions.
Both the Hornets and Lions were held scoreless in the first inning before the lone hit for Emporia State came in the top of the second inning. With two outs,
Quinton Carlberg singled up the middle before the Hornets were retired in the second.
In the bottom half, Missouri Southern jumped out to a 4-0 lead, as they tallied four hits including a solo home run.
The Lions added their fifth run in the third inning and after a scoreless fourth inning, Emporia State earned their second baserunner of the game as
Noah Geekie reached on a hit by pitch to begin the inning. Geekie advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch but the Hornets were unable to convert as they remained scoreless.
Missouri Southern added six runs on four hits and three walks in the bottom of the fifth as they opened an 11-0 lead over Emporia State midway through the game.
The Hornets earned a pair of baserunners in the sixth inning but stranded two on as they were again held without a run.
Following a pair of runs from the Lions in the bottom of the sixth, Emporia State was retired in order as they fell in the series opener against Missouri Southern 13-0 from Joplin, Mo.
Quinton Carlberg went 1-3 at the plate and
Palmer Hutchison went 0-2 and drew a walk.
Emporia State will take on Missouri Southern in game two of the series on Saturday, March 25 with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Mo.
