December 2, 2023 – The Emporia State Lady Hornets opened MIAA action with a 60-57 win over Washburn in the Turnpike Tussle on Saturday afternoon from White Auditorium.
Washburn controlled the first five minutes of the game as they jumped out to a 6-1 advantage over Emporia State. The first field goal for Emporia State came at the 4:51 mark in the first quarter on a three from
Allie Ostermann as the game entered the first media timeout with Washburn leading 6-4.
Over the next few two minutes, Washburn bumped their lead to 12-9 before basket from
Katie Horyna and a three from
Gracie Gilpin gave Emporia State their first lead, 14-12, with just under one minute left in the quarter.
Washburn would add a pair of free throws in the final minute as the game was tied 14-14 through the first frame.
The Lady Hornets opened the second quarter with an 8-2 scoring run, which included four points from both
Stevie Stinchcomb and
Faith Paramore, as Emporia State built their largest lead of the game 27-21 over the Ichabods.
Despite a quick five points from Washburn to trim the Emporia State lead to one point, the Lady Hornets responded to take a 30-25 lead into the halftime break.
Following the halftime break, both teams traded baskets in the first few minutes before a Washburn three with 6:11 remaining in the quarter gave the Ichabods a 35-34 lead. Washburn eventually matched their largest lead of five points with 2:13 remaining in the quarter.
The Lady Hornets were able to close the deficit to 45-43 entering the final quarter.
In the fourth, Emporia State retook the lead over Washburn for the final time as
Katie Horyna stole the ball and raced for a fastbreak layup giving the Lady Hornets a 49-47 lead. After another basket from Horyna and a jumper from the Ichabods trimmed the lead back to two points,
Tylieea Wallace scored on either side of the media timeout to give Emporia State a 57-51 lead, matching their largest of the game.
Washburn was able to score with 2:16 remaining to cut the lead back to four points before both teams were unable to score until the final minute when Emporia State regained their six-point advantage. After recording her second steal of the game,
Queen Ulabo scored in the paint to make the score 57-51 and force the Ichabods to call timeout.
After a Washburn three with 25 seconds remaining, Emporia State made three of their four free throws in the final moments to clinch a 60-57 Turnpike Tussle win over Washburn in the opening game of MIAA action.
Katie Horyna scored a team-high 14 points and added five assists.
Faith Paramore scored 11 points and had a career-high 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Tylieea Wallace had 11 points and eight rebounds.
Gracie Gilpin had nine points on 3-6 from three and
Queen Ulabo had five points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Emporia State advances to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Lady Hornets will return to action on Wednesday, December 6 as they host Rogers State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. from White Auditorium.
