December 6, 2023 - The Emporia State Lady Hornets rallied from a double-digit second half deficit to take down Rogers State 80-71 on Wednesday night from White Auditorium.
Rogers State got the game started with a layup on their opening possession before Emporia State followed with a 9-0 scoring run.
The run was capped by a pair of free throws by
Tylieea Wallace as the 9-2 lead for the Lady Hornets was the largest of the first half.
Following the scoring run, the Hillcats slowly trimmed the Lady Hornet lead to 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Rogers State put together a 6-0 scoring run in the first two minutes as the Hillcats took a 16-14 lead over the Lady Hornets, their first lead since the opening minute.
The largest first half deficit for Emporia State came with 2:39 remaining in in the second quarter as a Rogers State three put the Hillcats ahead 29-21.
Emporia State trimmed the deficit to four points by the halftime break as the Lady Hornets trailed 34-30 entering the locker room.
In the first half, Emporia State shot just 8-29 from the floor but knocked down 14 free throws.
Out of the locker room, Rogers State grew their lead over the first four minutes, eventually taking a 46-35 lead over the Lady Hornets, their largest of the game.
The Lady Hornets flipped the script on the Hillcats over the final six minutes of the third quarter, putting together a 19-5 scoring run to close the third frame with a 54-51 lead.
Eight straight points from the Hillcats in the first minute of the fourth quarter forced an Emporia State timeout with the Lady Hornets trailing 59-54. The largest lead of the quarter for Rogers State came at the 7:23 mark as they led 65-57 over the Lady Hornets.
Emporia State quickly netted an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, which was kickstarted by a
Stevie Stinchcomb three and capped off by a three-point play from
Katie Horyna as the Lady Hornets knotted the score at 65-65 with just over five minutes remaining.
With the score tied 68-68 at the 2:42 mark, a three from
Aliyah Bello broke the deadlock and gave Emporia State the lead they would not give up. The Lady Hornets held off the Hillcats as they shot 7-8 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to clinch the 80-71 win over Rogers State.
Tylieea Wallace led three Lady Hornets in double figures with 17 points and added seven rebounds.
Queen Ulabo had 16 points and recorded a double-double, securing 14 rebounds.
Gracie Gilpin scored 12 points and shot 3-6 from beyond the arc. Five more Lady Hornets scored at least six points, including
Katie Horyna and
Stevie Stinchcomb, who both scored eight points.
Emporia State advances to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Lady Hornets will return to action on Saturday, December 9 as they host Northeastern State. The game is scheduled to tipoff at 6:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.
