Lady Hornets fall on cold night at Wayne State

Emporia State shoots just 55% from free throw line in loss

November 25, 2023-The Lady Hornets cut a 26 point deficit down to four in the fourth quarter but could not overcome a 14 point difference at the free throw line in a 73-61 loss at Wayne State on Saturday night in Wayne, Neb.

Both teams struggled offensively early with Emporia State leading 5-4 at the first media timeout.  The Wildcats led 8-7 with 3:27 left when they held the Lady Hornets scoreless for 7:35 in a 20-0 run to take a 28-7 lead with 6:11 left in the half.  The lead reached 35-9 before Stevie Stinchcomb got Emporia State in double figures with 3:36 left.  The Lady Hornets would end the half on an 8-2 run to trail 37-17 at the break.

After the Wildcats scored the first bucket of the second half Emporia State got back to back three-pointers from Gracie Gilpin to ignite a 19-4 run of their own.  An Allie Ostermann three-pointer got the deficit back into single digits at 43-36 with 3:05 left in the third. 

Emporia State's Queen Ulabo scored with 7:19 left to go to cut the deficit to 49-45.  The Wildcats would then go 17 of 18 from the free throw line in the final 7:01 to secure the win.
For the game The Wildcats hit 25 of 26 form the free throw line while Emporia State made just 11 of 20 from the charity stripe.  Faith Paramore led Emporia State with 16 points and eight rebounds while Queen Ulabo and Gracie Gilpin each scored 13 points.

Emporia State is back in action on Monday night when they play host to Avila.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
