October 7, 2023 - Emporia State Volleyball took down Pittsburg State 3-0 on Saturday night from Pittsburg, Kan.
In the opening set, both teams traded points early on before Pittsburg State gained some separation as they led the Hornets 10-7. Emporia State rallied to take the lead as they scored seven of the next 10 points to take a 14-13 lead. The Hornets were able to hold off the Gorillas for the remainder of the set as Emporia State took set one 25-20.
Set two began with the Hornets jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Unlike the first set, Pittsburg State mounted a rally as they eventually built a 16-12 lead in the middle of the set. The Hornets responded with seven of the next nine as the took a 19-18 lead and were able to take set two 25-23.
Emporia State scored three of the first four points in set three before Pittsburg State rallied for six of the next seven on their way to a 7-4 lead. Trailing 11-8, the Hornets scored five straight to take a 13-11 lead and never looked back as Emporia State took set three 25-19 to capture the 3-0 sweep over the Gorillas.
Sandora Sasaki led all players with 18 kills in .259 hitting while Tasiah Nunnery added nine kills of her own on .364 hitting. Brailee Bogle tallied 31 assists and Sasaki, Bogle and Anakaren Chavez each recorded double-digit digs.
Emporia State returns to action on Tuesday, October 10 from White Auditorium as they take on Washburn. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
