Hornet Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets Against #20 Ichabods

Emporia State drops Turnpike Tussle to #20 Washburn on Tuesday night

October 10, 2023 – Emporia State Volleyball fell in three sets against #20 Washburn on Tuesday night from White Auditorium.

In the opening set, Washburn got off to a fast start as they built an early 8-2 lead over Emporia State. The Hornets were unable to rally back during the set as the Ichabods increased their lead throughout the set as they took set one 25-11 over the Hornets.

Emporia State took the first three points in the second set before Washburn rallied back to take a 10-6 lead. Despite the Ichabods rallying to build a four-point lead, Emporia State pushed back to tie the match 16-16. The Hornets were unable to regain the lead in the back half of the set but were able to tie the match 25-25 before Washburn grabbed the final two points to take set two 27-25.

The Hornets grabbed two of the first three points in the third set before Washburn retook the lead 4-2. Emporia State would tie the set at 6-6 and 7-7 before Washburn regained their advantage for their final time. With Washburn leading 17-14, the Ichabods scored eight of the final nine points as they took the set 25-15 as Emporia State fell 3-0 against #20 Washburn.

Sandora Sasaki recorded a match-high 15 kills while Caydence Doebele and McKenya Sorrells each had five of their own. Brailee Bogle finished the match with 28 assists.

Emporia State will return to action on Saturday, October 14 against Newman. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from White Auditorium.

NOTES: Sandora Sasaki has recorded double-digit kills for the 17th consecutive match. It is the longest such streak by a Hornet since Arica Shepard reached double figures in the final 28 matches of the 2009 season. It is the longest streak to start a season by a Hornet since the NCAA moved to 25-point sets in 2008.
