October 6, 2023-On a record setting day at the Jones Park Course, the Emporia State men came away with the individual and team championships while the Hornet women had a top five individual and team finish at the ESU Invitational.

Jaime Diaz won the men's individual title in record setting fashion as he led the Emporia State men to the team title in a tiebreaker over Fort Hays State. Diaz ran 24:43.70 to break the previous course record by six seconds and finish 13 seconds in front of runner-up Grant Bradley of Fort Hays State.Â
Henry Jones turned in the ninth fastest time in course history as he ran 25:35.64 to place third. The next two spots went to Fort Hays State before
Tyler Swift finished in sixth place with a time of 35:56.15 for Emporia State. FHSU's Ethan Fisher placed seventh before Colorado Christian's Samuel Schwarting became the only non-Hornet or Tiger to place in the top ten.Â
Asher Moen ran 26:06.03 for ninth and
Luke Gleason finished in 26:15.25 for tenth as all five Emporia State scorers finished in the top ten.  The Hornets won the tiebreaker 3-2 as the fifth Tiger placed 11
th overall.

In the first race of the day,
Tayler Williams once again finished as the top Hornet runner. Her time of 17:49.27  bettered the previous course record by over 20 seconds but was only good enough for fourth place on Friday afternoon. Regan Hodsden of Fort Hays State shattered the previous record by 37 seconds, finishing in 17:34.79 to lead the Tigers to the women's team title.
Catherine Lyon was the second Emporia State finisher with a time of 19:27.16 to finish in 14
th place.
Elizabeth Willhite ran 20:22.73 to place 27
th and
Madeline Martin was 31
st overall with a time of 20:34.47 over the five kilometer course.Â
Koe Schultz ran 21:33.57 to finish 38
th and wrap up the scoring for Emporia State. As a team the Hornets finished fifth with 104 points.

This was the final regular season action for Emporia State. In two weeks they will return to Columbia, Mo. to take part in the MIAA Championships. The women are scheduled to run at 12 noon with the men set for 12:45 p.m. at the Gans Creek Course.

The previous men's course record was 24:49.04 set by Emporia State's Matthew Maki in 2021.
The previous women's course record was 18:11.91 set by Emporia State's Jenna Ramsey in 2021.
