October 15, 2023 – Emporia State scored on either side of the halftime break to clinch a 2-1 Senior Day win over Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon from the ESU Pitch.
In the first half, the Hornets attacked with the wind at their back and used it to generate an 11-3 advantage on shots in the first half, including four shots within the first ten minutes.
Emporia State also added five corner kicks to their 11 first half shots but were unable to convert until the final minute of the half. Missouri Southern had possession deep into the Hornet end of the pitch before the Hornets cleared the ball towards midfield.
Mackenzie Dimarco pounced on the opportunity as she raced past two Missouri Southern defenders and converted the one-on-one opportunity to put Emporia State ahead 1-0 just before halftime.
Following the break, Dimarco doubled the Emporia State advantage less than three minutes into the second half.
After the Lions recorded a shot, Emporia State countered from a goal kick. The Hornets held possession in their half of the field before a long ball found its way to Dimarco near midfield. Dimarco once again raced past the Missouri Southern defense and slotted the ball past the Lions goalkeeper as Emporia State took a 2-0 lead in the 48
th minute.
Missouri Southern would find their way back within a goal as a penalty was converted by the Lions in the 60
th minute.
The Hornets outshot the Lions 5-4 over the final 30 minutes and withstood the pressure from Missouri Southern to clinch the 2-1 win over the Lions on Senior Day from the ESU Pitch.
Mackenzie Dimarco scored two goals and now has 10 on the season and 71 for her career. Emporia State outshot Missouri Southern 21-9 and 13-3 on goal.
Emporia State will be back in action on Friday, October 20 as they travel to Wichita, Kan. for a matchup against the Newman Jets. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
