Trio of First Half Goals Power Emporia State Soccer Past Newman 4-2

Dimarco records second career haul with four goals in Hornets' win over Jets on Friday night

October 20, 2023 - Emporia State recorded a 4-2 road win over Newman on Friday night behind four goals from Mackenzie Dimarco

In the first half, Emporia State started on the front foot as the first shot of the match came from Mackenzie Dimarco. The first goal for the Hornets followed just one minute later.

Dimarco secured a misplaced pass by the Jets in the midfield and raced towards goal. She was able to beat the final two defenders and slide a shot into the bottom left corner and give Emporia State a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the match.

Over the next 20 minutes, the Hornets outshot the Jets 3-1 before the second goal for Dimarco and Emporia State came in the 23rd minute.

Emporia State won possession in the midfield before playing a ball out to Alexis Cole on the left wing. Cole was able to slide a pass into Dimarco on the left side of the box and Dimarco slid past a defender and slotted the ball past the Newman goalkeeper to double the Hornet advantage to 2-0.

Dimarco was not finished in the first half as she would record her third goal of the match just 10 minutes later.

Following a Newman goal kick, Karlie Kanaga stole possession off a Newman defender and played a ball forward to Mackenzie Dimarco. Dimarco immediately shifted onto her left foot to beat the last defender and delivered a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner as Emporia State took a 3-0 lead just 34 minutes into the match.

The Hornets held their 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

Emporia State held a 9-2 edge over Newman on shots in the first half.

Following the halftime break, Mackenzie Dimarco and Emporia State wasted little time in their search for the fourth goal of the match. Emporia State won possession deep in the Newman defensive half as the ball came to Hannah Woolery about 25 yards from goal as she ripped a shot that bounced off the left post and rebounded back in front of goal for Dimarco to finish off the play with her fourth goal of the match.

Newman was able to score a pair of goals midway through the second half and trim the Emporia State lead to 4-2 but the Hornets held off the Jets for the remainder of the match to clinch the win over Newman.
