Hornet Volleyball Soars Past Jets 3-0

Emporia State defeats Newman in straight sets on Saturday night

October 14, 2023 – Emporia State Volleyball swept Newman 3-0 on Saturday night from White Auditorium.

After Newman took the first point of the match, Emporia State responded with five straight including two kills from Sandora Sasaki and one from Caydence Doebele. The Hornets continued to build their lead as they took a 21-9 lead over the Jets. Newman was able to rally off five consecutive points before Emporia State scored four of the final five points to take set one 25-15.

The second set started off in favor of the Jets as they built a 7-1 lead over the Hornets aided by a trio of service aces. Emporia State found a way back into the set as they eventually took a 10-9 lead. The largest lead for the Hornets came at 20-14 but was followed by five straight points from Newman to close the gap to 20-19. Both teams were knotted up at 25 before a kill from Sasaki and a Brailee Bogle service ace clinched the set 27-25 for Emporia State.

Both the Hornets and Jets traded points early in set three before Emporia State built up a 14-9 lead midway through the set. With Emporia State leading 19-16, the Hornets scored six of the final seven points to clinch the set 25-17 and the 3-0 win over the Jets on Saturday night.

Sandora Sasaki tallied 18 kills on .326 hitting for the Hornets while McKenya Sorrells tallied seven. Brailee Bogle recorded 25 assists and five service aces.

The Hornets return to action on Tuesday, October 17 as they travel to Hays, Kan. for a midweek matchup against Fort Hays State. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
