EMPORIA STATE SOCCER BATTLES TO 2-2 TIE AT NORTHEASTERN STATE

Hornets remain unbeaten in MIAA play

September 23, 2022-Emporia State remained undefeated in MIAA play as they played to a 2-2 draw at Northeastern State on Friday night.
 
The RiverHawks got on the board first in the 24th minute when Sydney Taylor snuck a goal past Hornet keeper Mackenzi Goen following several deflections around the box after a Northeastern State corner kick.
 
The Hornets evened things up in the 34th minute when Haley Sparks sent a perfect cross to Erica Self who one touched it into the net for the equalizer.
 
The teams were tied 1-1 at the half although Emporia State enjoyed a 6-4 advantage in shots with a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
 
Sparks put the Hornets in front 2-1 in the 81st minute when she turned on a ball that was deflected off of two RiverHawks and put it past the keeper from 12 yards out.
 
With just over two minutes left, the Hornets were called for a foul just outside the box. Myka Heimbach was able to get the free kick past the Hornet wall and sneak it just inside the post for the game tying goal with 2:07 left in the match.
 
For the match Emporia State outshot Northeastern State 15-8 with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal.
 
The Hornets are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Rogers State.  Kickoff from Claremore, Okla. is set for 1:00 p.m.
 
NOTES
This is the third match Emporia State has given up the game tying or game winning goal in the final 11 minutes.
