HORNETS WIN BACK AND FORTH BATTLE OVER CARDINALS IN FIVE SETS

Emporia State defeated William Jewell 3-2 in non-conference matchup

Box Score September 20, 2022 - Emporia State defeated William Jewell 3-2 in a back and forth battle on Tuesday night in the final non-conference matchup of the season for the Hornets.

In the first set, Emporia State fell behind 5-3 before scoring eight of the next nine points to take an 11-6 lead over William Jewell. The Cardinals eventually fought back to even the set at 18-18 before the Hornets closed the door on the comeback with four straight points after three consecutive kills and a Cardinal attack error. Emporia State held on to take the first set 25-21.

The second set went the way of the Cardinals early on and the Hornets were unable to answer back after falling behind early. William Jewell opened the set with an 8-2 advantage and were able to hold off the Hornets throughout the set. Emporia State was able to trim the deficit down to three points at multiple times within the set but could not find a way to clsoe the gap any further as the Hornets fell in the second set 25-20. 

The third set perhaps proved to be the most exciting of all five in the match. Emporia State started by scoring four of the first five points and six of the first eight to open a 6-2 lead early on. William Jewell fought back to take a 14-12 lead halfway through the set. The two teams traded points until with the Hornets trailing 21-20, the Cardinals scored three consecutive points to put William Jewell on the verge of a 2-1 lead in the match. Emporia State rallied to score five consecutive points, book ended by a pair of kills from Orianna Clements to reclaim the lead 25-24. Both teams alternated points until with the set tied 28-28, Emporia State got a kill from Winny Harris and Leah Mach to complete the comeback and win the set 30-28 to take the 2-1 lead in the match. 

Emporia State used the momentum to score three quick points early in the fourth set before William Jewell scored six of the next seven to take back the lead. Much of the set was back and forth between the Hornets and Cardinals and late in the set, Emporia State was on match point leading 24-22 before the Cardinals scored four straight points to force a decisive fifth set. 

In the fifth and final set, Emporia State wasted no time gaining an advantage as they opened a 7-2 lead over William Jewell. After three in a row from the Cardinals, the Hornets scored four straight in return to open an 11-5 lead. Emporia State then scored four of the final five points in the set with four different Hornets recording a kill to take the fifth set 15-7 and the match 3-2 over William Jewell. 

Leah Mach and Shelby Ebert combined to lead all hitters as they both recorded 17 kills in the match. Orianna Clements added 11 of her own while Zuzanna Buchnajzer, Winny Harris and McKenya Sorrells each recorded nine kills on the night. Riley Bernskoetter and Ainslee Stepp combined for 51 assists with 28 and 23 respectively. Megan Stretton led five Hornets in double figures with 25 digs in the match. 

Emporia State will travel south on I-35 for their next two matches against Central Oklahoma and Newman. The match against Central Oklahoma on Friday, September 23 is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
