ON TO THE HILL
Emporia State will hit the road for a midweek, non-conference matchup at William Jewell. This serves as a break before five consecutive road MIAA matches for the Hornets.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets played host to #11 Northwest Missouri in their third ranked matchup in seven days. Emporia State fell behind Northwest Missouri in all three sets but fought back to test the Bearcats throughout the match. The Hornets were unable to hold off the Bearcats late in both the second and third sets as Northwest Missouri took the match 3-0.
THE COACHES
Bing Xu is in his 17th season as head coach for Emporia State. He holds a record of 296-222 and has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament appearances. He is 4-2 against William Jewell.
Carolyn Beck is 71-160 in her ninth season at William Jewell. She is 2-3 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 3-9 this season and 1-3 in the MIAA. In attack, the Hornets have a trio of players averaging above two kills per set.
Leah Mach leads the way with 115 kills and is averaging 2.67 per set.
Orianna Clements is close behind Mach with 102 kills. Clements is hitting .207 on the season to lead all Hornet hitters.
Shelby Ebert has recorded 90 kills of her own at 2.09 per set. Ebert also plays a large role in defense for the Hornets as she ranks third in digs with 115 at 2.67 per set. At setter,
Riley Bernskoetter and
Ainslee Stepp combine for 8.42 assists per set with 190 and 164 on the season respectively. In addition, a pair of newcomers have made an impact for the Hornets in
Caydence Doebele and
Zuzanna Buchnajzer. Doebele has impacted Emporia State through the middle as she is second on the Hornets with 20 blocks on the season. Buchnajzer has recorded 61 kills on the outside while adding 13 blocks of her own.
SCOUTING WILLIAM JEWELL
The Cardinals are 7-7 on the season entering Tuesday's match after just eight wins last season. William Jewell is led in attack by sophomore Bella LaPorta who has 200 kills this season and is averaging over 3.5 per set. Anna Godfredson and Tatum Ernt also the drive the offense as they both average 2.25 kills per set. At the setter position, the Cardinals have Samantha Thompson and Drew Baxter who combine for nearly 11 assists per set. Thompson is averaging 6.30 and has 353 total while Baxter is averaging 4.58 with 220 on the season. In defense, Haiden Baade ranks second in the GLVC with 4.54 digs per set. The Cardinals also protect the net with Alex Dvorak and Tatum Ernt leading the way with 44 and 42 total blocks respectively. As a team, William Jewell averages 1.77 blocks per set.

LAST TIME VS. THE CARDINALS
Last season, the Hornets took on the Cardinals to kickoff the final homestand of the season. Emporia State fell behind early in the first set before fighting back to take a lead midway through the set but were unable to sustain the momentum as the Cardinals took the first set. The second set was similar to the first, with the Hornets holding a lead even later into the set before the Cardinals to take a 2-0 lead in the set. Emporia State eventually dropped the third set as William Jewell took down the Hornets 3-0.
UP NEXT
Emporia State will travel south on I-35 for a pair of MIAA matches against Central Oklahoma and Newman. The Hornets will take on the Bronchos on Friday, September 23 before returning to Kansas on Saturday, September 24 with a match against the Jets. These matches will be the first two of five consecutive road MIAA matches.

Shelby Ebert (Sr./Topeka, Kan.) has led the Hornets in sets played in the last two full seasons and is continuing the trend as she has played in all 43 sets for the Hornets. So far this season, Ebert ranks third in kills with 90 at 2.09 per set and is second in total points with 119. In addition to her presence in attack, she is third on the Hornets in both digs and blocks with 115 digs and 19 blocks so far this season.

Orianna Clements (Sr./Stillwater, Okla.) led the Hornets in kills during the 2021 season and ranks second on the Hornets this season for Emporia State with 102 kills. She also ranks second with 2.37 kills per set and is leading all Emporia State hitters with a .207 hitting percentage.
MACH SPEED
Leah Mach (So./Lincoln, Neb.) was third on the Hornets in kills during the 2021 season and is currently leading the way this seaon with 115 kills and is averaging 2.67 per set. Mach is pacing the Hornets with 129.5 points and is averaging just above three per set. She posted a career-high 18 kills in the Emporia State four set victory over Southeastern Oklahoma before tying that number in Emporia State's five-set victory over Fort Hays State. On the defensive side, Mach is second on the team with 118 digs and has added seven blocks.

Dorianne Lebron (Gr./Guayama, Puerto Rico) has been the primary piece for the Hornets through the middle as she has played in 40 of 43 sets this season for Emporia State. Lebron has tallied 40 kills in the middle with a .153 hitting percentage. The true impact is felt on the defensive side as she is leading the way for the Hornets with 22 blocks this season after leading the way with 64 total blocks in 2021.

Megan Stretton (Jr./Topeka, Kan.) has played outside hitter for the Hornets in the past but has transitioned to libero this seaon. This transition has led Stretton to play in all 43 sets this seaon. She leads Emporia State with 196 digs through the first twelve matches and her rate of 4.56 digs per set ranks sixth in the MIAA.

Zuzanna Buchnajzer (So./Lodz, Poland) has made her presence felt as a rotation player on the outside for the Hornets. Buchnajzer has appeared in 36 of 43 sets for Emporia State and has tallied 61 kills with 1.69 per set and has added 13 blocks on the season as she ranks fourth in all three categories for Emporia State.
WINNING HARRIS
Winny Harris (Jr./Atchison, Kan.) had eight kills on .636 hitting against Washburn and seven kills on .500 hitting against Northwest Missouri last week. In 21 sets this season, Harris is averaging 1.29 kills per set and is hitting .188.

TOUGH TEST
Emporia State is coming off a four-game stretch in which the Hornets faced three teams currently ranked in the top eleven in the nation. Following the matchup with William Jewell, the Hornets travel to Edmond, Oklahoma to take on Central Oklahoma who is receving votes in the latest poll and is 13-1 this season.
MIAA MAGNITUDE
Four MIAA teams are currently ranked in the top 25 with one team receiving votes in the latest poll. This total is only topped by the Northern Sun who have five teams currently ranked inside the top 25. Despite nine ranked teams and two receiving votes, the Central Region can only have eight teams make the 64 team NCAA Tournament.
